Weird trouble with DesktopX ...

... after uninstalling it through Impulse and reinstalling with the self installer

Wednesday, March 7, 2012 by neophil78 | Discussion: OS Customization

Hi there,

Maybe some of you may have saw that i have to reinstall a XP SP3 PC from scratch and that i can't get some older versions of Icondeveloper/Skinstudio/Iconpackager ... Well, kind of linking with that point i deceided for my second desktop PC, to uninstall everything (apart those three progs) through Impulse and reinstall with the self installer Progs.

For DesktopX, i had what was told DesktopX4 (version 3.91 beta) and Impulse told me i had as well DesktopX4 Pro installed (which is impossible because i didn't get the licence for ... ).

Though i uninstalled the 3.91 beta, reboot the PC, then installed the DesktopX 3.50.60 selfinstaller prog ... and here are begining the weird things ...

DesktopX is still installed in C:\Program Files\Stardock\Object Desktop\DesktopX BUT the widgets and so are no more installed in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Stardock\DesktopX but in C:\Program Files\Stardock\Object Desktop\DesktopX ... OK though i move back my widgets and so to the new place and launched a weather widget. At that time everything's OK, BUT after rebooting the PC, (widget was told to launch with windows), about half of the widget parts are not displayed : location, weather icons mainly. OK, i thought the widget cache (stil in C:\Documents and Settings\Philippe\Local Settings\Application Data\Stardock\DesktopX\WidgetCache) may have been corrupted and i cleared it, relauched the weather widget (which displayed correctly), reboot the PC, and then same trouble, the widget displaying is corrupted and elements are missing ...

Someone did alreday have the same trouble ??? and/or how to fix it ??

N.B 1: i go to the registry and saw a lot odf "DesktopX" entries which remain i think from the past Impulse installation, i unstalled the new version, and cleared up all DesktopX entries i found in the registry, the re install with self installer the 3.50.60 version, but the trouble is still the same

N.B 2: trouble seem to happend only with weather widgets & with any widget

N.B 2: it seems that self installors brings kinda changes to install path (Program Files X86\Stardock instead of Program Files\Stardock for example ... ) and don't know if it specificly because it's no more supposed to be installed on XP - french as well, for which pathes and other parts ("the "all Program" place in WB for instance) - are not  exactly the same ...

Any suggestion welcome ...

Uninstall it with CCleaner and use it (CCleaner) on the registry too. Reboot and reinstall.

DX 3.50 in the store will not allow anything scripted to run. This has been reported in several threads.

I don't know. I still have a copy of the beta archived. Have you not archived any copies for an instance such as this?

Always archive working copies so when things like this happen, you have something to fall back on.

I have years of Impulse archieves   ... but the goal is to do without the impulse archieves wich are unsuable without Impulse

Yes. When the store first opened, I started archiving everything. Only way to be sure you have access later.

Oh, you mean the DesktopX 4 beta self installer from the store ? yep i get one and of course i tried also with that one but the trouble keeps the same

N.B: i thouht it may be a trouble with Microsoft Jscrip 5.6 (installed with the .NET Framework 2.0) and i spend nearly the whole last night to uninstall all post frameworks ( 3.0, 3.5 SP1, 4.0 client profile one) to be allowed re-install the .NET Framework 2.0 (and the jscript), but it didn't  nothing better ...

Guess what ?? IT WORKS

I finally uninstalled the DesktopX4 beta (from the store) and without rebooting computer (what i ever do when installing/uninstalling a soft), i installed the v 3.50.60 (still from the store) then reboot and here went the miracle, every weather widgets are showing nicely even after rebooting and launching them with windows

If this (bad) experience may help others who may have the same trouble ...
