SoundPackager

Sunday, February 12, 2012 by LizMarr | Discussion: Stardock Support General

I haven't been able to get it to work. Installed it, clicked it, and it dies of an error (one of those lovely windows that say your program died but doesn't say why) I have Win 7 x64 with 6GB RAM and plenty disk space. Says that it works on Win 7.

I have unistalled and reinstalled twice now, the same gremlin holds up the sign saying it is dead.

Thoughts, ideas? Don't tell me to pay off the gremlins, I don't like what they are charging.

Has it worked before?  Is this a reinstallation?  Usually what causes crashes for SoundPackager is bad or corrupt sound themes.  Try moving all of them to a temporary location and see if it starts up for you.  They're located here:

XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Stardock\SoundPackager
or
C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USER NAME]\My Documents\Stardock\SoundPackager

Vista/7:
C:\Users\Public\Documents\Stardock\SoundPackager
or
C:\Users\[YOUR USER NAME]\Documents\Stardock\SoundPackager

I never had time or desire to try it. I has just been one of those things sitting there and I finally got tired of the Windows noises and decided to try some packages I got. Icon Packager is such fun, I was looking forward to the same with sounds.

Nope, moving things don't work. Got a message something like, "Windows is looking for a solution" then it was gone. No solution like it usually does.

Has a fatal error in the App Log with nothing I can figure out (or Windows I guess)

LizMarr: If you can, start cmd with a right click 'run as administrator'. Then type in the window (at the cursor prompt) sfc /scannow

and enter. Let it run. This is to fix any corrupted system files. See if that helps. If it doesn't, take a look at the .NET version you have and consider checking for an update of it.

The fault offset sounds like an app id error.

LizMarr, please redownload the build from the store. I think I've found what was unhappy and fixed it.

OK, you're going to kill me. This is about the same as waving one's underwear in the wind. I made a HijakThis log..

The new software crashed as the same (event entry upon request) Scan found something it fixed and something it didn't. But it didn't tell me what it was. The comment was vague, something like "I found something wrong and I found something I couldn't fix. Restart and I'll fix it"

Here it is {{ blush }} Feel free to tell me what to kill.  Lately the computer has been taking time-outs and gray screen like it does when applying themes. Probably something here has something to do with it. (darn, I hate having two somethings in one sentence) Does an absolutely dead, needs to be replaced, battery perhaps affect it? It's still in the computer basically to keep the contacts clean and the area accessed through that hole free of dog hair.

SFC checks that Windows system files are in their original good condition and that they have not been modified or corrupted.  If the sfc scan is reporting that there are system files that are corrupt beyond repair, then the problem lies deeper than SoundPackager.

I wish it would say just what.

I think the best solution would be to replace my crabby old hard drive before it retires on it's own. I have another 500, but it is part of a pair that I mirror backups on. Hate to loose the redundancy, but hate to use the use of the laptop too. On the reboot after running the scan then checkdisk ran. It didn't find as much as last time (which looked like the drive had been dropped) but it found a few things and corrected it all.  I wonder if a deep format will make the drive usable again or if it has finally reached the stage where it should be retired to being a door stop. (I have been in two different computer repair places who did just that - I wonder if it could be marketed?)

Perhaps I could put it on the computer that is running Win 8 dev copy and see how it works there...

I'm not sure that many of our apps will install on Windows 8.
