Bricked iphone 3

What not to do.

Monday, December 12, 2011 by JuniorCrooks | Discussion: Mobile Tech

OK I have had no luck at all searching the web for a solution so I thought that I would ask this here and see if I got lucky.

Here is the scoop. I had a motorola razr that was with Telus and had no sim card. I am no longer with Telus so I traded it for an iphone 3g 16g which was with Rogers who is the provider of my Experia x10.

So I get the phone and it was working great. The only thing was it still contained a crap load of stuff from the previous owner such as a a bucket full of contacts and music (not my taste). I think by now you might know where I am going with this. I decided to do a good thing and get rid of all that stuff not knowing what other personal information was left on the phone. Big mistake! Like an idiot I took a good working iphone and did a reset and erase all content. I think my fist mistake was not syncing it with my itunes. After the reset the phone is stuck in recovery mode with the picture of the usb cable pointing to the itunes icon. If I move the slider on the bottom I get the dial pad and saying that I can only make emergency calls.

Now the big problem is no matter how many times I have tried or what I tried I cannot get my pc to recognize the phone. I cannot even get itunes to recognize it. I have tried doing multiple things including deleting everything apple on my computer and reinstalling itunes, starting and stopping the apple Mobile Device and ipod service, placing the usbaapl.sys driver in my system 32 drivers folder, and holding and releasing the home and power buttons the way the videos explain on youtube. Nothing I do gets my pc to detect the phone. I even tried it on another laptop and also had no luck. When I check device manager there is nothing in there apple or is there anything in yellow. It is like the driver is not installed and the computer is not detecting it. I was beginning to think maybe the usb cable was the problem but when i use the cable with my charger it will charge my phone. Besides I am not the only person who has experienced this issue. What I am wondering is if not syncing the phone with itunes before I did the reset is now preventing the computer to recognize it?

I thought that i would throw it out to the community hoping someone here has experienced this and fixed their iphone. I am not at a big loss if I cannot fix it but its a bummer that I now have an iphone I cannot use.

HELP PLEASE

I highly doubt it LightStar. It is an older phone that was not purchased from them. They will probably just try to sell me a new iphone. thanks for the suggestion though.

I just placed an add on kijiji saying I will pay to have it fixed. I am thinking maybe someone that has already synced an iphone on their PC might get it to work. Just a thought I had and not sure it will work.

This may be what you've already tried, but just in case ...

To make the phone fully reset itself, you need to hold down the power and home buttons for at least 10 seconds (this cleared an odd little 'phone won't come back on after the battery ran down' issue I had).

Syncing on iTunes shouldn't matter either way, at the end of the reset process you went through, you should have the usb screen on the phone to tell you to start the initialization routine (plug and and let itunes do it's thing).

It's still also possible (if not likely) that the cable could still be bad. The power to charge comes in over different wires than the data that's used to sync / recognize, etc. the phone.

Like I said, you may have already done the full hard reset, if so, I can't think of anything else offhand.

yrag I have tried multiple ways of doing it. I tried turning of the phone by sliding the power off  then holding the power and home buttons for 10 seconds releasing the power button and held the home button for another 10 seconds. I tried turning phone off, unconnecting the cable and while holding the home button connecting the cable.  After doing that I tried holding the power button and home button until th apple logo appeared. Those are just a couple I can think of but I know I tried other combinations after watching about 20 youtube videos and it really did not matter what combination I tried.

I read an article that said to take a screenshot and see if it would detect as a camera in device manager. I discovered that if i opened the dial pad and pressed #### and then the phone button and then the power and home button at same time and releasing quickly it made a shutter noise and the screen flashed but there was still nothing in device manager.

Thanks Aleatoric but yes I did try that. Perhaps the cable is the issue and if it is then it is an easy fix.

Did you try holding down home button, plugging in USB and re-booting?

I tried it twice yrag. I turned the phone off and helled the home button and plugged the phone in and rebooted holding the button long after the computer boots up. The phone just stays in recovery mode with the usb and itunes icon showing on the screen. I will give it another go tomorrow. Thanks for your help yrag.

There's your error....should have stuck with the Razr ....

Maybe you've stumbled across this as well, but (again) just in case ....

See if you get any results using the info at the above link. It may not help, but it might be worth the attempt.

I would have kept the razr Jafo if it had a sim card. The razrs Telus had did not have removable sim cards.

yrag I will give it another go but the phone does come on as soon as the phone connects to the computer. I will try leaving it on though and see if it makes a difference.

Aleatoric I will check the link out now but its probably the one I checked out already and I still had no luck.

Thanks everyone.

Still no luck yrag even with keeping the phone on but I just got home from work and I am going to fix it or run over it with my truck.

Quoting JuniorCrooks, reply 18It was the damn cable.

Funny! Actually I suspected having a wonky cable so I went to the local dollar store and got me one of those cheap retractable cables. On the way out of the parking lot I thought I should probably go to Staples and get a better one. I bought me a 2.1 amp cable that has a cord diameter of about my wife's baby finger. Anyway long story short the cheap one did not work but the monster cable did. I am syncing as I type this.
