Repair Shell Icons
What's It Do in Win7?

Is IP's 'repair shell icons' feature functional in Win7 (64bit)? I still get default folder icons in Office 2010 Open dialogs after selecting/applying the option, in a few other places as well.

Didn't work here. Tried it twice. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Note: %userprofile% represents the path to user profile folder.
1. Close all folder windows that are currently open.
2. Launch Task Manager using the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC key sequence, or by running taskmgr.exe.
3. In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
4. Click the End process button when asked for confirmation.
5. From the File menu of Task Manager, select New Task (Run…)
6. Type CMD.EXE, and click OK
7. In the Command Prompt window, type the commands one by one and press ENTER after each command:
CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\LocalDEL IconCache.db /aEXIT
8. In Task Manager, click File, select New Task (Run…)
9. Type EXPLORER.EXE, and click OK.
This is worth a shot

It was worth a shot. Unfortunately, that procedure itself didn't change the shell icons. Then selected 'Repair Shell Icons' again in IPConfig after the above, again without effect - Office Open dialogs still have the default folders.

Daiwa.... don't know if you tried this, but run cmd as administrator and try sfc /scannow

I had done that once before when dealing with the SKS7 activation issue and it found/fixed corrupt files but failed to fix the SKS problem. Just ran it again & it again found/fixed corrupt files. I'll reboot & retry the Repair Shell Icons function.
BTW, when I previously tried to review the CBS.log file created by sfc, it wouldn't let me open it in Notepad - 'Access Denied'. Do you know how to gain access to the log file to review what was corrupted & fixed? I can't even find a way to log on as administrator in Win7. Also, is it typical for system files to be found corrupted on two occasions in the first 90 days of a Win7 computer's use? Should that cause me any concern?

Thanks, c242 - at least I know how to do that now. Unfortunately, learning that didn't help me much - I can't make heads or tails of the 7.2MB cbs.log file. Don't have a clue what got fixed. C'est la vie.
Doc -
Had no effect. No matter how many times I rebuild the icon cache and/or repair the shell icons, in any order, the Office open dialogs still display the default Windows folders. Not the end of the world, but I'm just OCD enough to care.
PS - running sfc disabled LogonStudio - had to reset it, FWIW.

That would most likely be the "corrupted" file that sfc found and repaired.

Thanks for the link, Doc. I'll probably hold off until I can verify what all 'Repair' does - I've customized Word & Excel extensively for my workflow & I have a suspicion that function would 'repair' the customizations. Not a big enough deal to risk 'em.

I've had the same issue as well. The fix that I use is = open IconPackager , click the settings tab, then click on Rebuild icon cache. Do this a couple times to make sure the cache has been completely rebuilt. Works for me everytime. -- Ace --
