Trivial but annoying XP bug....

Tuesday, June 29, 2004 by Jafo | Discussion: Stardock Software

My new install of XP [SP1] as yet unactivated never seems to remember my personal settings for sound schemes and cursors....reverting to the defaults on both.

Logon is normal...admin access user, etc.....but these two settings refuse to 'stick', though saved and applied as specific schemes.

Any suggestions.....reg hack, maybe?....

Set both Users with the exact same sound and cursor themes and see if it sticks...

....BTW...do you have 'Fast User Switching' enabled?

yes...but as I said I have not logged in as the other logon even once as yet....this is a new system....only about 5 days old...

I'll login as the other and set the settings the same on it.

Originally being idle would revert to the welcome [logon] screen...and I'd lose the settings...so I disabled that but I still lose the settings....

Here's the rub....when you have two users it writes to the registry that a given program is installed on the other users account. Usually you can tell by seeing where the Stardock programs 'Startup' files are located. (in which Users Folder)

yrag....it's nothing to do with Stardock proggies....I'm talking about a simple cursor change and a different wav file ion.....really basic stuff...that keeps forgetting.

No other installed app will have a bearing on these...eg CursorXP is not installed at all...

I think I fixed the cursors....in both logons I altered them and saved-as 'Windows Default'....overwriting the real default.....so now it 'can't forget [in theory]...

Sounds doesn't appear to allow the same.....though I 'could' just delete the default wavs and rename the new ones to the 'default' names....and fool XP....

uh-oh...I misunderstood you. Yikes....that's a new one. Give me a minute or so to fire up a couple of brain cells. I'm sure it's somewhere in the gray matter....just have to find it...

hummmmm...you can fool the sound too...just set the sounds you want and make a new theme (call it 'Jafo'). Apply it to both accounts.

yrag...it looks like it's sorted....though I'll need a cold boot to be sure....shall try that a little later....

I want to get all the bugs out of the system before I do an Image and restore to a second drive...as a full OS backup.

Ah....computers are such fun....
