Win XP blinds

Why are so many of the skinners only doing skins for Vista or Win 7? Some of us can't afford those OS and are stilll using Win XP and want our desktops to be pretty too. Just wondering why????

I don't have a valid XP disk. I have at least 2 valid product keys from broken computers, but I don't have a valid disk.
Karen, I'm not suggesting that you do anything illegal, but I can tell you this. The Valid XP Keys you have will work with any "matching" XP disc/iso.
If your key is for XP Home Premium, and you have a friend who has an XP Home Premium disc/iso, you can legitimately use it with your key and have a legal copy of XP on your PC.
If your key is for XP Pro, then you need an XP Pro disc.
When you buy an OS, you pay for the key, not the disc itself.
When I switched from Win 7 32 bit to 64 bit, the microsoft store let me download the 64 bit for free because I had a legit key. They might do the same for you, but then, your key is for an OEM version of XP, so I don't know how that would work.
All said, if you can get your hands on an XP disc that matches the level of XP that your key is for, you can use it, legally.
Problem is...if the keys are from old computers you bought at the store with everything loaded on them, then you don't have a usable key. That's only the OEM key for that machine, it won't work with a standalone install disc. That you have to buy completely separate.

I have to disagree...I have done it several times, as long as it's the same version of XP. 
I did once, only once, have a problem with activation, and it was cleared right up with a phone call to MS.

I've reinstalled XP SP2 and XP SP3 from disc to quite a few PC's and used the OEM key to activate it with no trouble at all. This month I even replaced the HDD in my aunts HP and used my copy of Vista 32 bit and used the key on her rig to activate it. (unfortunately,not everyone makes recovery disks)
Otherwise, anyone that replaced or reformatted a HDD would have to repurchase the OS for a key. While I'm sure MS would love the extra bucks, fact is, you paid for the key when you bought the computer and can use it again.

If you have the original Windows disc then yes it should work. But when you buy an OEM computer from HP/Dell etc, they don't give you that disc, you're stuck with the OEM install and that's it. That's why they make you create your own recovery discs because you can't just reinstall Windows without it.

Yes you can, I have done it. You just don't get all the bloatware and other non MS stuff that was originally on your computer.
Bebi, all due respect, I have done it over and over on different PCs for different people.
Wiz has as well.
All you need is the key on the sticker on the case of the PC, and a disc that is the same version that the key is for. The key tells MS if it's OEM or not, not the disc.
The disc don't care...lol. And, as I stated above, if there is a problem, a call to MS will clear it right up. I have done that too.

Interesting. It's been over 12 years since I had an OEM machine. I figured they wouldn't let you pull that off....*makes note to self*

Same here. My new laptop came with W7 Enterprise Edition and I was able to install the Pro version without a problem and that's from my old laptop.

question for Spencer,
when windows 8 comes, are we dropping xp for master skins? so instead of xp, vista,7, and 8, it will just be, vista, 7 and 8.

in the meantime, I probably may always have my XP for many more years to come-- with all my favorite vintage programs on it
You most welcome, and I will continue to support XP until as people say "it dies". Now Vista, that is another question. I may drop designing for that OS January 2012 and stick to XP and Win 7.

I know you asked spencer, but I can tell you that xp is not required for a MS.
are you sure babe? cause last time i checked, it still was..............

I PMed Spencer in July and asked for clarification because there were so many rumors going around about XP being a requirement. He informed me that at least 2 OS's should be supported and that he recommended xp as one but it wasn't required.

It's really a non issue for me personally since I no longer sell my skins. I asked ID out of pure curiosity.
