my 2 cents
Tuesday, July 19, 2011 by gmc2 | Discussion: Wallpapers
So, I'm going through the wallpapers to find one to highlight with my next blind (settled on Skyzyk's chopper) and found a picture of a dead leaf with 8 stars. A dead leaf, 8 stars, wtf.
I'm thinking to myself that I have better pictures than that where my finger got in the way and decided to upload a set of 5 pretty damn nice wallpapers. Much better, to me at least, than a dead leaf.
1 approved and the other 4 regulated to my personal page, very disappointed.
I've always stayed out of the wallpaper rants and bitching as I had not uploaded wallpapers and had no experience to comment on. Now I guess I do and can empathize with those that have had their work regulated to personal pages (or rejected outright) when work that appears to be of lesser quality is allowed to become part of the public galleries.

Jellyfish
Dandelion
Yellow flower
Rose-2
I'll be deleting these over the weekend, if anyone is interested grab them while they're here.

The Google+ +1 symbol means exactly the same as the facebook "Like this" and was referring to "beating a dead horse".
While I understand your frustration (it's happened to a number of my walls as well), I shrugged and tried to learn from it. I also became angry but discussed it with a very well respected artist in pm. She told me her truth in a female way and it made me stop and look twice. And again.
In retrospect, I think I should have "added" fewer Ps effects (which I had become enamored of) and applied them more tastefully. I think the "Doc's Pond" base image had more going on than the effects. Sort of like spices in cooking... to accentuate rather than replace the taste of the food itself.
There's no shame involved in being a member of the largest club here. It's happened to artists far more talented than you and I.

The links were removed as they bypassed the spirit and intent of the uploads being sent to your Personal Pages.
My second comment on this thread referenced that, however leaving you the opportunity to make amends apparently failed.

skyzyk appears to have taken that one on. there's more talent there than here and I'm looking forward to what will be done with it.
thanks Doc, guess I don't get around much, had no idea what it meant.

it's not always nature vs nature either
it's about how good is the picture AND how well does it work as a wall
the closest to work for me would be the jellyfish but would prefer more area around it so not as much would be blocked with desktop items (just looking at the shot posted)
dandelion and yellow flower - too blurred and too much like just having a solid color wall
rose 2 - maybe if tighter, clearer and had a really cool bug/spider/baby lizard on it
the leaf mentioned works for me to use during autumn or a drought

you can call anything 'art' - anybody can call themselves an 'artist'
but true appreciation is based on the perception of others
that picture from years ago (forgot who did it) - black dot on white background
art? not to me - to me just means the artist ran out of ideas, spent about 10 min on the pic and probably a couple of hours forming a plausible 'this is what it represents
giant can of soup - art?
not to me - to me, just a giant can of soup

WOW....love the screenshot of Redneck Dudes WB. I use this same WB almost exclusively, it's my all time favorite!! I even made some very cool Windows 7 style folders with wood grain texture to match the blind. The wallpaper in that screenshot of a dead leaf is interesting to say the least, and matches quite well, I need a copy of that. I have contemplated uploading my private collection of folder icons I created for this Blind in particular, but... I procrastinate because undoubtedly, someone will say I stole their technique for creating a wood grain effect, even though I learned in Graphics 101 that there is only a small number of ways to create the wood effect. So who needs the grief over that? not me of course.

That is a nice thing to say! Thank you!!

IMO, i would rather slit my throat with a dull Zubish infested dictionary than to use... ( insert artists work example here ).
It's a bit dam harsh saying that someone would rather slit their "fucking" throat than to use someone's wall. I'm also sure there are people here that would rather take a red hot poker in the poop-shoot than use a gothic cartoon woman as a wall, but they don't go around making a public statement like that. Perhaps someone is damn proud of their photograph of a dead leaf and enjoyed sharing it. sydneysiders made a fine example of a quality looking desktop using it. It IS art and if it wasn't worthy to be posted then the mods would not have approved it.
Now.. everyone get back to stduying the Zubish dictchenary uf spelling alternatives for the rich and not so famus.

One should never let the definition of Art interfere when they are deciding what they like. Just my opinion.

Quoting Island Dog, reply 9Ratings...personal pages....etc. It's all a dead horse that has been beaten hundreds of times.
And it will continue to get beaten, with all the ego-sticks around here.
Interesting read in the news today --"Creative types are full of themselves, study confirms" http://bodyodd.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/07/21/7114042-creative-types-are-full-of-themselves-study-confirms
On perusal of the article, here are a few interesting quotes: "While the creative personality has many appealing traits -- being curious, broad-minded, and open to new experiences -- it has a few unappealing ones, like less modesty and more arrogance, ...
But scoring low on honesty-humility characteristics can actually be quite helpful to folks in creative fields. "You're going to have critics and detractors and people who discourage you from pursuing your creative vision,"...the farther people get in a creative field, the louder the criticism gets, so it takes some self-assurance to stick with it and take creative risks.
So the threads on work going to personal pages will continue, and the dead horse will continue to be beat--it's just the nature of "art" (sorry mods--your job is thankless and repetitive; I DO appreciate you, though).
There is a caveat in the article for those of us who upload here, though:
On the flip side, though, creative pursuits often require teachers and mentors to nurture your talents and connect you to people who can get your work out to the public. "So the truly arrogant will have a harder time cultivating the relationships and networks needed to get 'plugged in' to a creative community,"
Just an FYI--I stopped being concerned about what goes to my personal page when I was offered a mod position at a different site and had my eyes opened about just how petty crazy this dead horse is. Having someone approve or disapprove of my picture is NOT the same thing as someone approving or disapproving of me as a person, and even if it did, am I not old enough to not NEED the approval of others to feel good about myself?

Because you respond to possible stimuli.

As one of the comments pointed out, such a conclusion based on the polling of 1300 college students really means nothing at all. I can poll 1300 cabbage patch dolls and make the conclusion that Zubaz can actually spell if I show them a printout of any of his replies and tell them to scream when they see a misspelled word.

I trust the mods and with an average of 8-10 years experience, obviously they didn't just "get off the bus". I honestly think they're unbiased and totally objective and they "call it the way they see it". Through the years, I've had plenty of stuff kicked back myself and I suppose my options were (a.) keep the work for my own personal use (b.) get to work, fix what needs fixing and resubmit until it's accepted or (c.) go to the forum and question, compare, bitch or complain about it. I've always opted for (b.)...(c.) accomplishes nothing in my opinion (well, except stir shit up) and it just ain't my style BUT to each his (or her) own.
