OOOOOOOOkkk...if you're daring try this:

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
Data Type: REG_DWORD [Dword Value] // Value Name: ShowInfoTip
Modify/Create the Value Name [ShowInfoTip] according to the Value Data listed below.
Value Data: [0 - ShowInfoTip Disabled / 1 - ShowInfoTip Enabled]
Exit Registry and Reboot

I had tried the same thing folowing microsofts instructions but that had failed and that was what prompted this post. Your procedure is slightly different. MS said to create the value of " enable tooltips" instead of showinfotip. I will try it your way yrag. Thanks again.

now that I have used it a bit, some of them are gone. Thanks!
some remain like,Mouseover on start button- "click here to begin" All the tips in the remainder of the start panel are gone. Its when I am working with skinstudio that they are annoying. Some that are turned off now, I miss. Damned if ya do damned if ya dont. Thanks again yrag.

Try going to Control Panel/Folder Options/Views and at bottom of list un-check "Show Pop up Description for Folder and Desktop'...see if that gives you what you want. If not, I have a Tweak proggie I've used for years and it will do just about anything you want with Windows. I think it's about $15 bucks (not even sure if they have a trial), so if you're interested let me know and I'll give you the link.

The setting must be hidden deep within the regisrty. I also have tried everything to no avail, but I will follow this thread cause I also would very much like it disabled.

Crissy - mine is disabled using the proggie in #11....I've never been able to find the setting(s) (without using the proggie) that disables all of them (I've dissected the program and it appears to change a lot of settings to achieve that.. I don't mind playing with the registry, but even I have my limits as to how far I really want to wade into the unknown

You also might want to check out TweakXP. They have some great tips there for doing things like this, and you might find your answer there.

Gary.. that's quite a program there. A real super tweaker. There is a trial (2days), and it's 19.95 now, but I'm really impressed. The abililty to create your own 'right-click context menus' is something you don't see everyday.

Tooltips and balloon popups are not the same thing. The hover on Start is a tooltip. Balloons will have a tail on them. They aren''t turned off the same way.
