Batting Zero with Zorro?

Tuesday, April 6, 2004 by Sparkina | Discussion: Stardock Software

I woould like, when I get more practice, to do a WindowBlinds theme pertaining to the movie THE MASK OF ZORRO, with a UserPane and StartButton and Shutdown Background sporting images of Antonio Banderas as the heroic caballero. I also did make wallpapers that are fantasy abstract scenes featruing photoscans of Zorro and Elena (Catherine Zeta Jones) against an abstract background, with hearts, cupids, and big fancy Zs.
Are such themes forbidden on this great site? I read that celebrity images are not allowed due to copyright laws or some such.

There is a fine line between what is considered "fan art" and copyright infringement. If you are the photographer who took the pictures of Banderas and Jones or if you have written permission from the photographer, then creating a theme using their images is okay as it is considered "fan art" and public figures are fair game, provided you are creating all the graphics for the theme, not copy-n-pasting graphics from a Zorro website.

If you don't own the photos or if you are using graphics from a Zorro website, those things are copyrighted property of another person and you would therefore be in violation of copyright laws and your work would not pass moderation.

That my take on the whole issue...hope it helps
