Essentially what happened was that the company who owned it, eFront, was one of the many casaulties of the dot-bomb collapse. When they ran out of money, they didn't pay their admins at sites like skinz.org. But they handled the situation so poorly that they alienated the community of users that hung around there.
Most of the users that were there moved here or DeviantArt.

Admittedly, this site is modeled after skinz.org in many ways. But no site can ever replace skinz.org. Skinz.org was my home.

Most long-time skinners and skin users thought of skinz.org as their home....unfortunately, ever since, any and all Skinning/graphic sites are compared to skinz as the 'benchmark' by which all others are judged....

Short story:
1: Admins of the site *should have* gotten some kinda payment.
2: Owners said: F**K YOU!! No way, you should be happy just to be allowed to work for us.
3: Admins left.
4: Users started pulling their work of the site.
5: No users = no working site!
6: Skinz.org is "officially" dead to The Community
There's alot more to the story, but I guess someone else will fill in the blanks!
