All Programs hover

Wednesday, March 17, 2004 by Satans Child | Discussion: Stardock Software

I need a little help please.

In the start menu when you hover over the All Programs button the default color apears on alot of skins, on others the graphic stays the same and only the color of the arrow changes color. OK, my question is what properties do I need to change to get the "hover" graphic to stay the same on, say "CopperDeck II" I've been in skin studio for a couple hours and just can't figure it out any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's really tricky, because you can't disable the hover color, (at least I haven't found a way, and I'd be ecstatic if someone proved me wrong) so you have to get the hover color to blend with the graphic. This color is found in Classic Colors > Menus > Menu-Hightlighted background (XP only). Be aware this is also the hover color for the "Log Off", and "Turn Off Computer". Good luck......... .................... btw, you can keep the Chicken Grease.

Koa .... thanks for the help but I guess I'm more "thick" than I care to admit. I did as you suggested but I noticed no change. If you load "CopperDeck II" and open the "All Programs" menu there is a graphic being used for "hover" I would think then that there would be a way to also do this on the "Start" menu, I guess I'm wrong. Thanks for your help!!

If anybody wants to enlighten both myself and Koa, we're not going anywhere ... thanks.

I don't have CopperDeck II, so I can't look at it.......... but are you talking about the All Programs 'button' (on the startmenu) or the 'flyout menu'?

The 'Start Menu' hover graphic is the same one as the 'Pull Down Item' graphic. It work's everywhere on the start menu except on 'All Programs' as Koasati mentioned you can only change the color of the there. Someone correct this if this info is wrong.

The Startmenu hover graphic is 'Start Panel' >'Places List' >'Item' ............ not the same as 'Menus' >'Pull Down Item'

Thanks for your help people, it's appreciated.

You might want to download and check out this skin: https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?library=1&SkinID=3921 by Snidely Whiplash. He used an oversized graphic for the All Programs Arrow bitmap to eliminate the hover color completely. The graphic covers it up. You could even use this to animate the arrow.

By the way, I got this tip from TheGreenReaper in the Unofficial SkinStudio Documentation Thread. Post #57

I've liked that tip so much that I'm expecting to use it on every skin I make in future...a fairly easy way to take control of a bit that otherwise remains as a default.

Shameless D ... I just took a look at that skin but .. the All Programs part of the start panel is one solid color as opposed to CopperDeck II whick has a glassy look to it. I don't think *there I go again* it would work the same.

Satans Child. Take another look at the skin. Specifically, open the Stetz Folder in your Windowblinds folder. Have a look at the OliveStartPanelMoreProgArrow.bmp.

He made all three states of the arrow large enough to cover the More Programs panel background, the hover background color and the All Programs text so that you never see them no matter which state is active. His is a solid color because that fits his theme. Yours can be glassy or fuzzy or even psychedelic and animated if you want. Just make the three-image-tiled bitmaps the way you want them.

I think thats a tip that should be in the "Unnoficial WindowBlinds Documentation Project" thread in the skinning section! That is an awesome idea! I think I'd thought of it at one point but never tried it. Cool stuff! Thanks for the tip.

Shameless D .... that is a great solution, I would have never thought of that, thanks for the tip!! I'll be trying that right after work.

Thanks

Çërêb®øJÐ , it already is in that thread, as I stated in my original post. The tip was posted by Laurence Parry, TheGreenReaper. It is post #57 https://www.wincustomize.com/msgboard.asp?BID=WCS&id=187649 All I did is bring it to your attention. The real credit goes to brewman, the original author and Snidely Whiplash who ported the skin to WB, and to Laurence who brought it to our attention.

As I said, I think this is going to be the default way I deal with the All Programs skinning in future - but there are a few little glitches I've noticed with this which people should know in case they wonder:

1) There is a noticable "flicker" when the mouse-over changes when the default background colour is displayed.
2) The Arrow button only ever seems to display 2 of the 3 states - the default and mouse-over. As far as I can tell, the clicked state isn't used.
3) ...I'm sure there was something else I noticed when working on this a week ago, but I've forgotten it now

3) The mouse-over and clicked state frame positions are the reverse of what skinstudio says they are. Thus, the put your mouse-over image in the third frame, and it doesnt matter what goes into the second frame, since there is no pressed state.

The coding glitch that has caused the reversal has been brought to the attention of Stardock, so I would expect that to be fixed in a future update of SS. To be on the safe side, I would make your pressed and mouse-over graphics the same. Then you won't have to update when the glitch is sorted out.
