we have older regular cell phones. we're thinking of upgrading by purchasing unlocked smarter phones then changing out the SIMS card.
will this work?
wouldl I be able to have wi-fi connection, at hot spots, without having to purchase a data plan.
we have ATT.

My smartphone Droid 2 Global has a sim card. And you can access wifi without a data plan...but service for a smartphone at all the major carriers requires a mandatory data plan.

you can purchase unlocked cellphones from various places. IF the smart phone has a sim card you can trade it over, you just won't have all the features.
I'm retired, don't need all the bells and whistles, just want a nice phone and really don't need a data plan.
I haven't made the jump, still undecided.

I'd ask someone from your carrier's tech support if I were you, before trying.
