Pin programs to start menu

I want to be able to pin program shortcuts on the left side of the start menu, where it puts the browser and email shortcut. I want to put ones I want there. I know you can have it list your recent stuff but I want certain things listed. Is there a way to do this? I am at a loss on trying to figure it out. I tried searching for other threads on it but didn't seem to find this question answered.

Just drag the programs' icon onto the start menu. You can also delete programs from the left side, by right clicking and choose "remove from list". Also, (if you want) you can turn off that lsit of frquently used programs (which changes as you use them) by right clicking on the taskbar and choosing
properties ----->start menu--->customise. Then set the list of frequently used programs to 0. Doing this gives you the whole left side of the start menu to keep shortcuts to the programs you want there without them constantly changing.

Thanks so much both of you. Worked very well. Can't believe I didn't think of dragging it or ever notice the pin to start menu when you right click. Guess that really shows how much I pay attention.
Wouldn't by chance be able to tell me how to have it show as the icon I want? I tried right click and properties but the icon won't change. I looked in iconpackger didn't see it anywhere. I'm probably missing something simple, wouldn't be the first time.

You should be able to right click on the icon, bring up its properties. then click "change icon". You should be able to change it to what ever you want. There may be additional icons for the particular program in its folder, or you can find additional system icons in windows/system/shell32

crissy14...I got it to change. I had to go to the folder for the program and change the exe file for it there, but it worked. Don't get why it wouldn't work with the right click, properties and change icon thing though. That's always worked in the past. My guess is because its pinned on the start menu. It works now though, thanks for all the help. Also love the nick, have to when its my own name.

another way to change the icon is to make a shortcut to the program and change its icon and then drag it onto the menu. the only problem with it though is that if you change the icon you have to remove the shortcut from the start menu and then drag it back on. By making shortcuts you can also include links to websites. I have an item on the leftside that is a link to wincustomize.

Good to know Travis. The link to the website is good idea too, I would use it often. I will keep that in mind. It's nice to be able to finally put some icons on the left side, it looked rather strange without any.

its a registry trick. You can change the links to the folder my music. also with the right program you can change the manufactures link into an actual link. So you can change two things. Maybe more, but this is all that I have been able to change so far.
Open up regedit. browse to currentuser/software/microsoft/windows/explorer/usershellfolders
change string in my music to whatever folder you like.
Now for the manufacturers link you need a preogram called branderxp: http://download.com.com/3000-2195-9013683.html
that should set you for now.

be sure to back up the registry in case you mess something up. I don't think in this case it would hurt anything major, but you can never be to careful with the registry
