Going crazy with SDC

Wednesday, November 5, 2003 by c242 | Discussion: Stardock Software

Tried to download Skin Studio for several days now... I really tried everything : Switched Servers (Atlanta / Calif.) several times, tried all chunk sizes, still that stupid 'Invalid Chunk Data' error (But only with SStudio). I ask myself what those chunks are good for anyway...

I feel for you c242, but I have no idea what to tell you. Seems to be a lot of squirrelyness going on lately.

Un-install SS thru SDC (both if you show two) and then delete the 'Skin Studio' folder in Stardock folder. Re-boot. Open SDC and try and install the 'Pro' version (should be the only one showing). In the mean time I'll see if I can find a backdoor to this.........

Download this http://storage.stardock.com/files/skinstudio396d_free.exe and see if it does the trick of showing the Pro version available in SDC after you install it. Caution: that is a direct download link.

BTW: make sure you have 'show pre-release versions' checked or nothing will show.........

Yrag : I think, You got me wrong. SStudio shows in SDC, but I can't download it. And I don't think, it is a good idea to mix standalone apps with the ones included in an OD subscription.

Not sure if this is of any help...but I had an older version of SS and SDC. When I first looked at the list of available updates (on SDC) it only showed dashed lines for SS. I updated my version of SDC and rebooted...I also checked (selected) the "Show Pre-release Versions" in lower left corner. I had already uninstalled the only version of SS (came with OD) before I did all this...even deleted the folder. But after rebooting, I saw the newest version (beta) and was able to d/l and install it...it did install (default) into the same Object Desktop directory as the older one...not into the Stardock directory.

You're right Carl....I did mis-understand you about whether it showed or not. You're also right about the mix and match with stand alone apps, except that the SS beta is fully functional with the only exclusion being it's not 'Pro' version and will not trash your OD scrip. Better to have something then nothing. You can try it if you want and I will prowl the newsgroups to see if anyone else is still having this problem (I didn't see any earlier). You may, when it is all said and done, have to hit on T-Man for his expertise.

Can't believe this is still not working for you...I know you switched servers around and chunk size (should be set to Atlanta, 65k chunk size) now check one more thing...make sure C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\Temp\Base is there. Your SDC files have to be whacked somewhere...just gotta find out where. You might want to just do an un-install and re-install of SDC. I checked all the newsgroups and what not and no one else is having this problem anymore so I think we're down to guessing.....let me know

I am defragmenting my HD at the moment, no other option left... What is really weird, it's always the same file that hangs. Tried it on another machine and everything updates fine there...

It really is weird....I think there has got to be a missing file or something that's stopping this. That base folder is home to all the update and what not files that SDC performs so my guess it's somewhere in there. As a guide that base folder should have approx. 40 folders and files...if it doesn't I think a re-install would be in order.

You know Carl, I just thought...did you use that SDC to update another machine via a network?

I just caught a thread where on a re-install of SDC, Skin Studio disappeared....it appears you're not alone. Let me (or you can) catch somebody on chat and see if someone forgot to do something on the last builds of SDC........
