WinCustomize Levels and Quality Standards
Thursday, October 21, 2010 by Island Dog | Discussion: WinCustomize News
On WinCustomize.com we have a ranking system. Each member has a level that they begin with, and, throughout their membership, is promoted to higher rankings which can mean added benefits and privileges. Some examples of these privileges are uploading without moderation and the ability to actually sell skins on WinCustomize. Promotions are given to members who display superior skinning techniques first, after all this is a community skinning site and that is obviously the criteria we first look. Of course community participation is also factored in, but ultimately skinning is what is important here.
Summary of Levels on WinCustomize:
- Exile and Visitors: These are the two bottom levels of WC. Exile is reserved for spammers, pirates, and people who don’t obey the rules of the site. Visitors are limited users that can’t post on the forums, and can only download a very limited amount of skins.
- Citizen: This is where many are, and generally a user of the site would be at this level as someone who has registered with the site, and has a moderate download cap on their accounts. They can also participate the on the forums and submit skins to WinCustomize. Note: Customer levels are different, so you can be a Citizen and a Subscriber at the same time.
- Apprentice/Master Apprentice: If you are a regular contributor of skins and themes to WinCustomize, then Apprentice would be the first rank you achieve on the site. Master Apprentice is the next level for those who continue to contribute to the site.
- Journeyman: This is respected ranking on WinCustomize as you have been determined and voted upon based on your skinning ability and quality contributions. These are users who we trust to upload without moderation, which means their skins go directly into the gallery without the approval of a moderator.
- Master: This is the highest ranking that can be achieved by members, and will be achieved by skinners who show outstanding skinning ability and contribution to WinCustomize. Being a Master Skinner gives you the ability to sell your skins on WinCustomize.
As you might know, WinCustomize is a moderated skinning site, which means we evaluate skins that are submitted and decide whether or not they make it into the general galleries. This basically comes down to quality control to ensure that we have quality works in our galleries. Over the past several weeks we have been taking a hard look at the state of the current galleries and reading members concerns in the forums and via e-mail.
We have found that some submissions have been of lower quality, and that quantity has become a prerequisite over quality. Going forward we will be increasing moderation in order to maintain our quality levels. Members that have ranks which allow un-moderated uploads will also be held to these standards. If it is decided that quality is not to our standards, members can and will go back to moderated status until improvements are seen. This step will enforce the legitimacy of rankings, and will also allow us to make sure that all artists are able to submit quality work and not get buried in the library. A demotion will not be seen as a punishment toward a member (unless it is for spamming) yet a natural flow of promotions and demotions to keep everyone at their deserved ranking. Any person that is demoted will be eligible for promotion once their quality increases.
The staff at WinCustomize does want to thank our members for their contributions – you make the site what it is today. We just want to ensure that WinCustomize remains the site that people go to for quality skins, and we want to make sure that every artist has a chance to have their quality work be seen.

First Dave if you had taken the time to look at my submissions before you responded you would have noticed I have never uploaded a icon. I am referring to the people who are complaining about what they call lower quaility items. Not every member of wincustomize is a professional graphics designer so there will be differences in quailty.

Actual 'DOCKS' should have there own category. They are of an entirely different level of skill and knowledge. I've only done a few and remember how difficult it was for me and I ended up getting some great help from people more in the know. To me, keeping the icons in with the docks would be like mixing Wallpapers and Windowblinds.
Considering most icons produced these days are in png format, with a multitude of free apps and free online services to convert them into .ico files, the png icons should have a gallery separate from docks and possibly even just renamed to Dock Icons as they are usable in Windows, Linux, and Mac. Keep the DOCKS in the ObjectDock Gallery.
The DOCKS are lost among the icons. Searching through them is tedious (I have had issues with the search bar in both IE and FF when trying to search a particular gallery...often showing me everything in all galleries...but this issue aside.....) and I, personally, will often go to DA where the docks are separate to find what I want.
And while I am rolling along....I think it would be interesting to see a contest just for the Dock Artists. I don't think they get enough recognition around here or on any other site.

I agree. I put my massive Gallery of PPE's through WinRAR several times, out of space considerations for the Walnuts.
Result?

Lighten up, fellas. ![]()
And Po' is absolutely correct. The Dock is a separate category altogether, and should have it's own Gallery. I know this is anathema, and that this subject was "settled" a long time ago, but that's some of my last two cents.

Actually people were complaining about certain people that hold the rank of journeyman or higher (people who's work does not go into moderation but is auto approved) abusing the privilege/responsibility of rank and flooding the gallery with sub par work.
You hold the rank of Apprentice and anything you submit will be moderated.......nothing's changed there.
It's a warning to people with a rank that allows for auto approve to self moderate and isn't directed to you in the slightest

Does Jafo know you're raiding his dictionary?

You are correct and had you mixed up with another person, sorry about that. (being old does that sometimes) I know my quality isn't close to many people on here but I just take longer to do things and do them the best I can. When an upload is accepted I'm thankful. You have plenty of time to improve but my time is running out. Doesn't mean I'm not going to continue to try and improve and you should do the same. The fact you make docks, etc means you enjoy it so continue to enjoy it. Something isn't accepted use it on your own desktop. Remember most of the best skinners learned PS either with schooling, spending years working with graphic programs, or just spending hours and hours and learning it on your own. I never had the time till the last couple of months and time can be a real problem. If one doesn't have it we can't be expected to be as good. Bottom line, enjoy making what you make and it has been said many times but do it for yourself first.
That's all I have to say on this topic but agree something has to be done in some of the galleries.

WinMonster....your way the hell off base here. And I take personal offense at what you said here. No one here has this so-called high and mighty attitude your claiming or thinks "we should not have to deal with people of lesser talent because they will never be as good as us"....that is total bullshit. Everyone here is more than willing to help out anyone that "asks" for it. And if you don't take advantage of that its your fault. And everyone here started off as lesser talented artists. I didn't know squat when I started doing docks or Winstep themes...but I didn't sit around complaining about it...and I taught myself over time.
As far as this piles of cash comment. I don't have piles of cash either! I started out using MSPaint of all things! And I don't have unlimited hours to learn the in and outs of Photoshop either...I learn as I go...no one taught me shit! And I'm not complaining about it...its just how it is. I don't sit around feeling sorry for myself that I don't have what program to work with...I use what I have and do what I can.
And there are standards set here on WinCustomize that "apply to everyone" even those high and mighty you claim are here. Your work will never be banned here...it just might not get to the main galleries...thats something you have to work for...like "everyone" here has done...no exceptions.
If your here complaining about something to do with your docks...just what is your complaint?
Yeah...and whats wrong with that? There are standards set here that apply to everyone...even the so-called high and mighty. When you are promoted here you are expected to keep up the standards that got you promoted. Wonder how everyone would feel if I just started hammering out crappy dock backgrounds and flooding the gallery with them? Would that work for everyone? I don't think so. And thats what this is about...someone taking advantage of their promotion and going for quantity over quality. No one cares if your at least trying to improve...that's not the problem. The problem is just throwing anything to together and calling it art and expecting everyone to accept it. This would be a really crappy site if they let that happen here and I'd be the first one to leave.
And no one here was a "professional" when they started....they worked at it. And I don't see myself as a professional...I'm still working at it.

ALL requests to have a members submissions removed are to be directed through an email or PM to Island_Dog or Jafo.
That is basically correct with the caveat that moderation in general will be increased to ensure that the Galleries maintain a quality level.

Speaking as a member and not a skinner.....
The wallpaper gallery has been a bit repetitious as of late. The standard of usability has been mostly overlooked. While I like unique and original art, it has to work on my desktop. Even without icons on my desktop, a lot of what I see in the gallery is just too "busy" for my tastes. To be blunt, more WTF than WOW.
@ WinMonster2 . Skinners do not set any standards, other than their own. It's up to the site mods to set the site standards for the lower ranks and in my honest opinion, those ranked higher than MA should still personally hold themselves to the same standards. Most have been around long enough to ask themselves "Would this make it into the gallery if it went through moderation?" or "Can I do better?" and answer honestly.
We all want the same thing, for WC to be the #1 place for people to come to for quality skins and wallpapers. The Public galleries are the showcases, let's display our finest.![]()
I think this post is a reminder, not an accusation. Don't take it personally.

Ahhh...to be young and have that kind of energy again. Just thinking about doing that gave me a headache.![]()
And no offense to wallpaper creators but I rarely find anything in the gallery here that I would use as a wallpaper....unless it was made for a specific WindowBlind. And I'm not saying that all of them are crap....some of them look pretty cool and artsy...just not desktop material.

Wizards post is correct only so far as walls for desktops with icons applys in my opinion.
I never use icons so I only need a backdrop...anything will do as long as it is good.If that means we need a seperate ART section then fine but please dont count out purely artistic walls...I believe there is room for both as long as they are of high quality.
(not knocking you Wiz,just offering a second opinion)

Don't get me wrong, I put lots of highly detailed art on my desktop, some that go with a blind or DX theme, but many just make me go "WOW, that took some imagination and talent!" I don't know squat about art, but I know what I like. ![]()

Ya know...it's just a thought...but a 'Wallpaper Tutorial' wouldn't be a terrible thing. What defines a 'usable' or 'functional' wallpaper with icons or docks or whatever you like to decorate your desktop with. It doesn't have to be 'content' oriented, as I believe any content or theme could be made to work. Maybe a short series covering perspective, coloring, lighting; what is 'easy' on the eyes, etc.

What I look for in a wallpaper is something stunning...high resolution...scenic...some place I've never been perhaps. I also look for fantasy walls...but they have to be very well done and simply because I'm picky. Blurry looking walls will never make it to my desktop. But to be perfectly honest...walls really don't get to much time on my desktop. This is because of what I do though. When I'm working on a Winstep theme or when I used to do docks I would usually use a wall that either matched the dock or theme until I moved on to the next one and then it all changes. When I'm not at my pc it really doesn't cross my mind whats on it.
And a tutorial would be good...but you either got it or you don't. I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder though really.

WinMonster2 I think you are taking this the wrong way. Just a thought for you and I hope you don't take this the wrong way. You have to admit it takes a lot longer to make a good set of Object Docks than it does to crop a few Dock icons. You I would guess never thought of this but a great set of Docks get uploaded and 2 hours later you load 8 icons. Those docks are now already on the second page and in another day moved to further down. I think the suggestion of taking several of your dock icons and than zip them, now make a screen shot of all of them and post that and mention all icons included in zip. or upload 1 icon every other day or so. I really don't think you ever looked at it as moving other good work just posted from the first page so fast. If this upsets you than there is nothing I can do as I'm only trying to explain one of the problems that can be fixed very easy and you can still enjoy your icon making.
