Installation problems
Sunday, September 28, 2003 by dabe | Discussion: Stardock Software
Stardock components. I like it alot, mostly for cosmetic
reasons, but I'm also figuring a more useable desktop, right
now. In other words, I'm a newbie, and I'm having fun.

But, for some reason, OB is miserably corrupted. Every time I
try to run it, I get a dialogue box that states "Object Bar
has encountered a problem and needs to shut down". If I try
to hit the "Tell Microsoft about the problem" button, my whole
system hangs, and all I can do is reboot. So, I hit the "Don't
send" button now. And now, every time I restart my computer, I get the same lousy message.
I tried to uninstall and reinstall OB (at least 3X), but it
has not solved the problem. I tried uninstalling, then going
through and deleting all mention of OB, except my downloads (I
don't want to redownload everything), but no good. I
reinstall and get the same problem.
But, I cannot delete OB fully. It always installs one of the
bars, but never restores it to the original MS configuration,
even after I try to fully uninstall. I guess I gotta get rid
of the downloads, huh?
Also, all icons in the system tray disappear as soon as I run
my mouse over it. Gone. Empty. And, if I open up the Task
Manager, the only app it says I'm running is SysMetrix, though
it does list all 36 processes that are running. That's a lot
of processes, I think. I've had to put stuff into my Object
Dock just to be able to access them easily, like Zone Alarm
and ICQ.
My system looks like this:
Dell XPS T500 upgraded to 1.2ghtz with a Powerleap Celeron processor
Windows XP Professional
256 MB RAM, which I just upgraded today to 512 MB
NVidia Riva TNT2/TNT2 Pro
1024 x 768 x 75 hertz
32 bits/pixels
In System Information/Windows Error Reporting window, it
states:
Application Error Faulting application objectbar.exe version
1.6.0.628 faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault
address 0x6f6d6552.
This is a lot of information that is totally meaningless to
me, but I hope it can help one of you help me.
BTW, I also cannot run DesktopX. It completely hangs my
system. I tried uninstalling it, and I get an error stating
that it cannot find the install app, or something like that.
All this bugginess is starting to really discourage me, but I
don't want to give up yet. TIA for any assistance you can
provide.

Anyway, of the unregistered versions, I am up to date on everything. I'd hate to think that just because I'm not registered, I'd get excessively buggy software, but only registered versions get the useable stuff. Besides, I've only been doing this for about three weeks, and my problems with DesktopX have been right from the beginning. I've never been able to use it. However, Objectbar problems started after I downloaded Minimalism. I really liked that design, and it matched my other desk stuff so well. Now, I'm using a bar that I have no idea what it's called, because it seemed to just "be" there. It's very nice though.
Your thoughts?? TIA
Di

I just thought...MCP is a beta and thus not available to you, so forget I even said it...OB should still work fine w/o it

Hi dabe and welcome to the boards.
One thing I thought of....on my laptop, I was having problems with ObjectDock crashing. I really wanted to keep the downloads but it seemed like I needed to completely get rid of everything to stop the crashes.
What I ended up doing was taking the downloads and storing them in a separate folder so I could do a "clean" reinstall. Then I started moving the downloads back in. I finally found that a certain icon pack I'd downloaded was somehow causing it. I know this isn't the same program but maybe this would help you?

Anyway, OB is working just fine. But, DesktopX won't uninstall. I get a message saying "Could not open INSTALL.LOG file." I think I'm just going to have to go through and delete folders. I hate doing that, though. Any suggestions?
Thanks again
