Can someone please advise me what a locked thread means?

It means that the thread has run it's course (subject wise) and is of no further use.

Actually, from what I understand it is because the thread became a problem with people fussing and such. Locking it makes it so that what ever it was going on will not continue.

Keila's right................ Until recently, all we could do when a thread got out of control, was delete it. Now we can lock it, which removes the comment field, and it sinks to the bottom of the board.............

Actually, I said the same thing, I just said it nicely. Translation: When a bunch of uncivilized morons go berserk over something that probably has nothing in common with the original intent of the threads' author (or for that matter anything else subjective )

I should have added that it is locked so that future generations can view first hand what a moron in action looks and acts like so perhaps they can better themselves (although that's not setting the bar very high!!)

Thanks all. I understood, of course, that no further comment could be added but was uncertain why it (the thread) remained posted or at what point it was decided to lock it.

Have little experience with message boards (vs. newsgroups) and have noticed that things do stay posted for a long time. I am unsure of the principle upon which posts "sink to the bottom". Any further enlightenment is appreciated.

When one posts in an active thread, it goes to the top of the message board list.
When a thread is either "Locked" or is no longer active, it will be "pushed" or "sink" towards the bottom of the message board.
Eventually, all threads will sink so far down as to becom non-accessable.

OK,  yrag, was right too!   He just said it so nicely, it didn't sound right. His second explanation is right on the mark!
