Some skins can't be edited by skinstudio ????

Wednesday, August 13, 2003 by neophil78 | Discussion: Stardock Software

Could anyone from Stardock (or others ...) tell me why some skins (like for example Salamendra from Morphium, or elsdee from denilloOc) are unable to be edited by skinstudio (V3.0.0 buid 618 - Which is a released version and not an alpha or beta one ... ), crashes the PC with a hard reboot to do, while some other very recent skins too, like (PiX Office from PiXtudio, Revel from Chadamus, Vgreen from Essorant, Try This from Z Studio etc ....) are not giving any trouble ???

It's very annoying .... )

N.B: using with WB 3.51 under WIN 98 2nd with 32 bits color system

that happened to me too, but I never found out why...

I just kept trying... one way I used was to copy the file while in skin studio and rename it.

I think that will help you if you copy and rename the file. then open the renamed file. just make sure you don't make any weird names. just keep it simple with no spaces

It is probably a operating system problem. It use to crash all the time with Win98SE for me too. Win98 doesn't handle memory as well as WinXP. Therefore, when graphics intensive programs start operating, away go the resources and in come the crashes. Sometimes, you may not even have enough resources left to load it at all. Win98 doesn't even return the resources when you close a program, in case you want to start it again, so that it can restart it quickly, unless you reboot. I specifically got WinXP just so that I could use Object Desktop without the crashes. I even stopped using Windowsblind programs with my Win98 partition completely because it slowed it to a crawl. I have 384MB of Ram and Skin Studio still crashed my Win98. But, it never crashes my WinXP system on the same computer. And, it never slows it down either, even with all the Windowblind/Object Desktop programs installed including DesktopX.

Maybe its because all the skins, which cant be opened, have masks to many images. Mine has.

Well, for ChasUGC, even just after e reboot and about 93 % free resource GDi and 70 % free system resource i get that problem since very few time and just on 2/3 skins ...

m0rphium : actually the two skins which are giving me this trouble is your's ans elsdee from danilloOC. effectivly your's has a lot of mask images but elsdeee has none !!!!

In fact i can't see the relation between the numbers of masks images and the crashes of PC just while attempting to open the skin ... ???

I also tried with the latest Skinstudio version via SDC and it's worth, i nearlly with ALL skins have an "list index out of bounds (-1)" error and then the PC carashes ... so i went back to SkinStudio V 3.0.0 (i'd happyly kept Component Manager and all the previous versions of all softs ... )

All I can tell you, neophil78, is that I had that same problem with skinstudio crashing in Win98. My system is a PIII 750 and 384Ram. But, it never once has crashed in WinXP. I can't even begin to use DesktopX in Win98. It slows down that system to a crawl. It is clear to me that Windowblinds4 and CursorXP are optimized for WinXP. I never really enjoyed Object Desktop until I got WinXP. I know it seems like an expensive endeavor but, if you really want to enjoy Object Desktop, you will need WinXP. I couldn't even run my anti-virus and firewall and Windowblinds and Object bar with Win98. Now, with WinXP, I can run everything, including DesktopX, without any problems. Processor speed, and Ram would also be an consideration, especially if your system doesn't meet the requirements for WinXP. It sounds to me like you have a hardware and OS problem.

XP ?? the biggest official spyware of the world ??? with more than about 28 integrated modules to look after what u are doing with your PC ?? (i've recntly read an article telling about this, it's terrific ... > )

did you try the renaming file trick? (it not really a trick, it is just that skinstudio doesn't like spaced and wierd text letters in the name of the file)

If the file has a long name with spaces or dashes it might be a problem. just copy it using the skinstudio copy and rename it to something else.

I bet it will work once you copy it.

and I do think it has something to do with win98. at times I would get the same thing others said here. i couldn't start other programs even though the program I was using was off.

Protection of what ?? if anyone wants to modify any skin, there's always the solution to edit the .uis file with a text editor ... so why r u thinking of a protection avaible just with skinstudio ????

can't stand that

Neophil 78,

In case you didn't know, Win98 has most the same modules(services) as Win98. You just can't access them and turn them off the way you can in WinXP. In other words they are hidden and running in the background.

Also, I just tried editing PixOS with Skinstudio in WinXP and it worked fine. I'm telling you that the problem is Win98, believe it or not. I had the exact same problem with Skinstudio in Win98. And it never ever happens in WinXP.
