Zombie Outbreak - completed

Wednesday, September 1, 2010 by k10w3 | Discussion: Skinning

I started a new WB skin...looking for some input.

I plan on making 2 substyles, one that is "infected" and one that is "immune" -- the screenshot below is infected (creepy font, bitten start panel, eyeball expander, green edit controls).  My intent is that the immune version will have normal font, plain start panel, and light grey/white edit controls, for more of a utilitarian, everyday skin.

Let me know what you think -- good, bad, etc.

Thanks.

maybe you need to work a little bit more on the maggot who's on the dark green side

Yeah, that one sort of looks like it's floating up the panel toward the end instead of crawling.  I need to add more frames (it's already 107 frames, but it needs more), and I need to add some going diagonally, and down, instead of all of them facing north/south.

I've been working on the start menu animation (the maggots).  It's truly disgusting.  I have to add some more, but if you want to see a sample I've uploaded a beta version here:  http://www.mediafire.com/?fh0t3th6t10m9
Looking good (gross).

Some very cool innovative ideas here, K! I love the tray expander eye that looks up on mouseover

Thanks for the kind comments, guys.  I'm really having fun with this one (that's the whole point to skinning, right?)  I just mastered an open, purulent wound (a/k/a pus-filled sore).  Not a whole lot of real estate in the Windowblind for that, but I can see it on a matching Rainlendar!

Karen! I love it!!! Nice blood splotch and maggot, and I love the animation!!!! More maggots!

For the min/max/close, could one be a half eaten head?

I'll try to design something like that and see if it works.  Those buttons are kind of small for adding the amount detail it takes to pull off something like that.  It might work for the start button, though!

I didn't have the nerve to suggest it...but I did think it.

If I'm not mistaken there was an aquarium skin some time ago that had fish swimming back and forth in the window frame. Yeah...thats right...you ain't gettin out of this one that easy!

I "sold" more than a few copies of WB just by running that skin.  It was sad to see that function go.

Start animations are great (The vivian tam one makes me cry it's so lovely) but how often do you see the start panel compared to seeing a window frame?  Oh well.

Pretty Cool Karen!!

If you are interest in animating the windows frames look here https://www.wincustomize.com/explore/windowblinds/6720/ WB7 will still support it .This skin hasnt been updated for 7 so taskbar buttons are not correct, but the frame animations work and they are done in two layers where the bottom layer is tiled andd the top is stretched.

Oh, thanks, Harley!  I downloaded it now and will dissect it later when I get off of work to figure out how its done.  I should have went to you in the first place, because you ARE the king of animation here. (I grant you karma for the help).

Infected start button, normal state.  I'm not going to give away the surprise and tell you what it does on mouse over or pressed, but I'll let you know I'm VERY pleased with this.

Two things:

  1. I really like the way this is going
  2. You are mixuign metaphors.  Zombies and skelotens rarely go together.
    • Zoombas and skelotens do though.

I'm not just toying with the genre of the living dead, here.   Thirty percent of the movies in my DVD collection are zombie movies.  In "The Return of the Living Dead," the protagonists are trapped in a funeral home and when the toxic gas turns into rain, everything in the cemetery starts coming to life, INCLUDING the deceased who have been in the ground long enough to become skeletons.

Watch the trailer and see for yourself -- at 0.23 seconds into the trailer...there's my proof!  Check it out! http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi1684538649/

I've attempted to put animated maggots on the titlebar, and it's just too much; all that wiggling makes it rather nonfunctional.  I know the infected version of this blind is definitely in the NOT tasteful category, (reference the LESS IS MORE - Themers pls get good Taste" thread), but between the open, infected wound and the blood splatter, while still trying to keep the text readable, and the window shrinkable, (shrink the window, and the maggots wiggle off the window, out into the margin, cut in half, still moving...perhaps the maggots, too, are zombies?), it just wasn't working.
