Libraries back up, restoration begins

Wednesday, November 26, 2003 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize News

The libraries are back up. So here's where we're at:

We're going to ship the archive to California to be installed but that will take some time to do.

In the meantime, everyone who uploaded a skin after October 1 will be receiving an email letting them know how to quick update them. Authors who resubmit their post-October 1 skins will automatically have their skin date updated as if they were new (our way of thanking authors for doing them).

Also, anyone with Apprentice access or higher can also help authors and the community out by submitting missing skins too (screenshot will still be needed). Here's how you do that: Go to the file library and you will see which skins are missing by the special missing skin thumbnail. There will be a [Help Update] link there. We'll be keeping track of who helps the most and sending out T-shirts for Christmas to some of the top helpers as a token of our and the community's appreciation. Note: Do NOT try to submit missing skins using the usual "upload" mechanism. Do it from the Help Update system or from the link you (as an author) received in email.

By working together, we may actually be able to have reasonably up to date libraries by Thanksgiving!

Thank you for all your help! Have fun!

I also ran into the same problem as stockholm syndrome, what was the issue?

OK, fine. I think I broke it though?
I went to the Dock icons and to "help update" and I get "ERROR TEST1 You are not authorized to view this page ".

Should I just wait a bit?

By the time I 'unmodify' mine, take a screenshot, figure out how to make a zip, and go to upload... someone has beaten me to it! I think I will watch a bit, then fill in with missing parts when it slows. I'm not used to zipping stuffs.

goodmorphing steps out of the way and cheers everyone on!

Yes I understand that. I thought Apprentice level was = to "level 3", which made me think I'd be able to upload. Am I wrong?

Guess I was wrong. I had a "help upload" prompt on the missing files but don't anymore. Oh well, I could have helped.

Well whichever, glad things are back! Happy holidays peeps.

I do hope that backups will overwrite the "help" being given when they are available - it's all very well for temporary downloads, but things like preview images might well not look as the author intended, and if Stardock has them backed up they should use them.

Surely this is unfair? I notice the top skin from before the crash is now buried on page 4 and sinking fast everytime someone uploads older stuff

Maybe you haven't got the original upload dates...

conclusion better is worth to wait than the base of data is remade and
work all together to go more quickly

@Xav73: I'm afraid that the version of OSXP NG you uploaded is an old one. I would prefer it if people just waited for the restore rather than uploading any more of my skins.

Hopefully the restore will over-write what people have uploaded

When I contributed the contents of my hard drive to the restore effort, I designed my screenshots as a temporary solution that gives the visitor an idea of what a skin looks like. I tried my best to accurately match a skin to the proper owner. I did check the skins themselves for readme files giving the name of the author, and I checked to make sure that the file size of the file I was restoring was the same size as the listing in the library that I was matching it to. I hope my efforts helped to provide skins for other users to enjoy until a restore from the official WC archives can be done.
