Help with required quality for an upload - Bryce renders
Wednesday, March 10, 2010 by bimph | Discussion: Wallpapers
G'day all - I am still a noob so if this is a dumb question - I'm sorry. Is a bryce render of sufficiently good quality to upload as a wallpaper - or should I tweak it in photoshop or xara or something similar. If it needs to be tweaked can anyone offer any tips. I told you guys I was a noob!

Well, the moderators don't generally like Bryce here; I think it's because the general quality of its output is not up to par. Many people use Vue, PhotoShop, PaintShop Pro, TerraGen, 3DSMax, and a variety of other tools (some free, most rather expensive). For the most part, it tends to come down to a combination of your patience, your skill with your chosen software, and your talent as an artist. I tend to lack all three so I haven't attempted to submit a wallpaper in a very long time.

I know what you mean about the output quality of Bryce - but I also use Vue and Photoshop. I was also wondering about size and overall pixel count.

Where's that 'Delete Karma' button?....
bimph ... the 'problem' with Bryce [and other image 'generators'] is that often it is a new user [to the proggy] who clicks a few buttons and goes "WOW...look at that!!!" and promptly uploads the 'result' here.
Unfortunately [for the new user, AND the site's Moderators] this is NOT the first time any of us have seen a palm-tree-in-a-torus-hovering-over-water-with-a-chrome-sphere-or-two [and dolphins].
Think of it like...."if only the Mods had altzheimer's then everything would be new again"....except they don't.
ANY program can HELP create good walls/whatever ....but ALL require practise, experimentation, and a little vision....
...and practise...

I wouldn't include dolphins if I were you and that probably goes for palm trees too! And I'm not trying to sound like a smart ass with my reference to a Bryce render either.
I use 1920x1200 : 1920x1080 : 1600x1200 : 1280x1024 pixel formats as my base size's (at least for the time being) but the more (varied) the better.
Take a good look around the wallpaper section here on WC to see what styles / trends and sizes are on display.
Basically - go for it and show us what you can do!

and make sure you put in some Britney Spears stuff. The mods go gaga for that.

This tends to be more that people do not understand or use the renders settings to their advantage. Bryce can render very high quality images. The premium setting has some anti-aliasing effects that most do not use.
IMO, I think some would rather quickly render an image to upload it than take the hours or days to render a quality image.
Just as with Vue the lighting of a scene will greatly affect the final image.

Thankyou everyone. I understand your concerns about Bryce renders. I have looked at some other galleries and seen some of the embarrassing renders on display - while claiming to be art. I have no intention of featuring dolphins wizards and dragons together with Ken and Barbie from Daz in leotards or armour - and more of the same crap you see everywhere else,
I too also render in the highest quality settings in Bryce and Vue - and sometimes add to and embellish the image in Photoshop.
If I ever do upload a wallpaper I am accutely aware that your name AND MINE are at stake. Thanks to all of you for you good advice - your humour - and for taking the time to respond.

Old age and treachery is the only thing I have left.
I agree with I. R. and will be waiting to see your work.

The trick is to make a Bryce render not look like a Bryce render! That's a good reason to tweak it!
