Widget same name?

Tuesday, February 9, 2010 by Doubird | Discussion: Stardock Support General

Hi, can someone submit a widget clock with the same name as one already in the gallery ?

Thanks

The problem with that would be if someone had the older widget and then downloaded yours...yours would overwrite the older one. I recommend using a different name or altering it enough so it wont overwrite the older one.

I think this is what they are talking about Xiandi.

Philly, exactly. I made a clock widget called DartBoard awhile ago... and today someone has one in the gallery with the same name. So I was wondering if someone was allowed to do that and Xiandi just explained that it would overwrite the other. Also if I tell someone to search to find my Dartboard clock, they might get the other clock instead. I will mention this to the person that submitted the clock and and see what he or she will do. Thanks.

I would think the mods would normally catch that, but stuff does happen.

Forgot to mention: I thought when something was submitted that the names were automatically verified somehow. Are they?

p.s. I am not at all mad about the name thing... but I'm sure others would not like having a widget that uses the same one as theirs.

Makes me wonder why there's no database of used user names, you know like when you register at a website

Actually, there should be no problem at all. The EXE file for your clock is named DartBoardClock.exe. My file is named DartBoard Clock.exe (with a space.) Neither will overwrite the other one.

The zip file asks does ask to overwrite. But it still can be confusing if I tell someone about my clock and tell them to search for it by name. They could download the wrong one. Anyhow. I think widget names should not be the same(even with just a space) because some people could get very mad if they see another widget with their name.

Skins can have the same name, there's nothing unique about one unless it's trademarked or imitates another persons work.

I understand the trademark, but still a skinner should have the some rights to the name of his widget, gadget, etc  I personally don't want people coming out with widgets with the same names as mine. Also you mentioned if the skin imitates another persons work... well DartBoard clock from NetaholicsAnonymous is very similar to the one I had done.

Out of respect, I would Not call one of clocks 'Foundation Clock' (already done by Tiggz) or 'SD Mini Clock' (done by Vad_M).etc. And if someone already had a clock with the name I gave mine, I would greatly change mine. So I hope there is some middle ground here as to a solution that suits all people.

So as to keep peace, I have renamed my upload, and the accompanied zip and exe files.
