goodbye old friend

Thursday, January 21, 2010 by gmc2 | Discussion: WinCustomize 2011 Feedback

The new beta site is certainly a good looking, professional, commercial site. I'll miss the focus on the users and artists that contribute their work that made the WC what it is today. I, like most of us, will still be around. Where else could I find the resources and expertise to help me with my hobby when I get stuck or need advice.

It may just be my stodgy personna that hates to see things change unnecessarily but then again it's not up to me, is it.

So, goodbye old friend. I'll miss the community feel and ease of navigation that has become second nature and welcome in the new slick commercial phase of your existence. May you live long and prosper

I tried to suggest (diplomatically) in reply #6 that subscriber status should determine customizability.

No one bothered to lend that much support. Thanks.

I thought it was a good idea but didn't echo it and Brad did respond to individual customizing with a shrug and "I dunno". I assume that to mean "no" but I could be wrong.

I think it works...it just takes getting used too.

I suppose you are right. All things change, you just have to roll with them.

It is a beta after all so I'll give it more time before I make any further statements. The more I use it the better it seems so  in time maybe I'll like my "new friend" as much as I do my old one.

I thought your response #34 was to the point.... I wish Admin would relate to:

1. What will be the subscriber privileges with respect to altering the visibility of the ads/ customizing the site? The answer "Not sure yet" is odd since the site planning has gone on over a year. It's certainly not reassuring.

2. What (besides unlimited downloads/premium skins) the subscriber can look forward to? There was, if you remember talk of various levels of access depending on that. I think explanations would go a good distance in dispelling the FUD.

Yes it was but I'm willing to see where all this is headed before griping too much.

You raise two very good question,Doc. It would be nice to know what we will be getting for our money.

It is my hope that the ads(regardless of whose ads they are) will go away but if they are needed to help support the site then a reduction in the subscription price or at least for renewals should be in order imo.

For subscribers, anyway!  Doesn't matter whose ads they are, they'll soon become frustrating and annoying to those who are already loyal customers and who already purchased the software.  Sure the current ads are place holders... but place holders for what???  If the replacents are community based and of general interest, fine... but if they're commercially driven then the driving will see many driven away.

What's that saying, less is more???  Well yeah, that just about sums it up.  Sure manufacturers/producers need to have public awareness of their products, but constant in-your-face repetition just pisses people off.  Less IS more! Instead of colourful but annoyingly glary banner ads, give us informative news items about new or updated products and more demonstrational videos to show off their virtues.  That would be preferable and less likely to drive people away.

At the end of the day, if you take the people out of community, you end up with an empty shell... a 'place holder' devoid of spirit.  Same with a company!  Take away the customers and you end up with stock and nowhere to sell it.  Hopefully, the customer here has a voice and none of this doomsday stuff comes to pass.

I'll buy that. I do seem to remember that levels of access were going to be enacted which would give various different privileges....I think I.D. wrote that, though I'm not sure.

I don't want griping either, Wiz. I do want facts or policies to be elaborated. I think the FUD that exists now could easily be dispelled.

We'll see.

Thanks for the pm, btw! Haven't got there yet.

I agree with reply #37.

Me too, I was going to suggest the same thing

To be honest, I find the front page of the new WC too glary and hard on the eyes...

Check out my alternative dark style for WinCustomize - https://forums.wincustomizetest.com/375710

It will help you eyes, that's sure. I don't understand why so many sites choose blinding white as background. Anyway with Firefox and Stylish it's possible to customize the look of any site!

On visiting the personal profile page of a skinner, I just see the latest skins whereas in the old site there was an option to browse through his/her whole gallery.

I HATE that! Not only can't I find all the skins of others, but I can't see all mine, which I used to check the downloads and sometimes my friends would stop by to re-download older skins they lost. Also, where is the settings tab? How do we change anything in our profiles??

Over all, I'd say the new site is slick, but not user friendly.

I kinda hate it.........
