What killed the .msstyle?
It died too young.

Why are there no .msstyles files posted anymore? Why is the .msstyles section on this site no longer there? Did the release of Vista kill them off? Did updates to windowblinds also do so? There are enough XP users out there to make it a viable option. So why doesn't anyone make them? I need answers!!!!!!!!!!!

You also need to learn to ease off the bold faced type and to choose a different font.

ummm well msstyles died because its a terrible way to skin windows...it hacks files in the system...windowblinds doesn't so that plus windowblinds is like 30 times better...msstyles doesnt have near the cool features that WB does and WB only cost $20

When was there ever a msstyle section on this site? Windowblinds is king here (for good reason).

They are an inferior method of skinning....and as with anything it's survival of the 'fittest'...
40% of the US doesn't believe in 'Natural Selection'...but this is just another example of why they are wrong....

msstyle had a short shelf life. And since WindowBlinds came out....who would want to use msstyle's?

This site has never had a msstyle section so nothing killed the section off as it never existed.
Plus WindowBlinds predates msstyles.

Plenty of .msstyles being posted at deviantart and other skinning sites. They are however mostly aero clones anyway, though

The .msstyles skinning method died basically because no one developed an easy to use program to skin the .msstyles format. Sure there are hacks out there to modify the required system files to allow the applying of non-digitally signed .msstyles files for XP, Vista and Windows 7 (and even one that only modifies the files in memory called AVE Styler), but no one ever developed an easy way to actually design .msstyles skins after TGTSoft died. One attempt was made with a product called AVE StyleBuilder, but to tell you the truth it would take a rocket scientist to try and figure out how to use it. I myself developed many .msstyles for Windows XP over the years, but had to give it up when support for it died. Stardock is the only company to develop a fairly easy to use product to design and skin all three OS's with ease. Granted SkinStudio could still use a lot of improvement, but it is the best thing out there today for designing OS skins, and Windowblinds itself has seen extreme improvement of late, as have many of their products.
So you probably should not expect much support from software developers for created skins in the .msstyles format. With the death of TGTSoft I do not believe there are any visionaries left.
