WMV TO MPEG2 Converter
help with quality for DREAMS
Monday, November 16, 2009 by AzDude | Discussion: Animated Wallpapers
Using either Vista or 7's version of movie maker I have been able to
loop Dreams OK , but then the file is saved as a wmv file causing higher
cpu usage when used as a Dream ....
1st attemps using a couple free programs I have to convert wmv to mpeg2
at either 720p or 1080p have not been good - the quality and smoothness
takes a hit ....
I don't have ( After Effects ) ... do you know of a good converter that will
FIX this problem ( Free or Not ) ... and maintain the quality ...
Any ideas to help with this problem ... i'm all ears .... thanks Az ... ![]()

TMPGEnc is the best have all editing done colours/ fps/ size etc before using it though or you get stutter of the loop.
Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate is also good. wmv <-> mpg is one thing AE does not do.
Down the line watch that no other programme takes over your mpg codecs, ffdshow or AVS will ruin your looping ability. Can you roll back before AVS ? - AVS does lots but badly and takes over the MS mpg codecs. To test if it has happened make the same dream using a wmv and a mpg file - both should loop perfect if the mpg stutters at the loop only a re-install of the OS works for me - have a HD image made before trying video programmes.
If movie is 1280x720 it is best to leave at that and let owner's computer upscale the video, if your movie is already better than that leave at 1920x1080 or whatever it is unless changing in AE by overflowing the work stage.

TMPGEnc 4.0 Express is the way to go.
As Ausvet said, make sure you do all of your work prior to using it and only use it to convert to MPG.
If you or anyone else wants the best settings to use, PM me and I'll be happy to give them to you.
There's a trial for TMPGEnc 4.0 Express if you want to test it out. It leaves a watermark but for testing it doesn't really matter.

I use 'ANy Video Converter'. IT's free and converts for mpegs, itunes, ipod, wmv, etc..and allows you to control the quality of output.

Windows 7 would be enough the mpg codec is excellent, trust very few programmes to touch your codecs or near perfect loops are impossible. TMPGEnc, Xilisoft and PowerDirector are OK to trust, leave well alone ffdshow and AVS destroy ability to make a good mpg loop. Multi codec packs are a disaster too. ffdshow got put on my laptop by a HTML Editor and it screwed all mpg loops and even SCRs asked did I want the video played by it too - a question asked before the SCR runs !! - fortunately I had an image backup prior to its install. AVS ruined the same way earlier this year and left me with just wmv loops - with mpg loops there is less ammo against you.
There is a codec analyzer online to see what codecs is what, by Nirsoft if I remember.

I've done plenty of both.
Although I'm more into creating original stuff nowdays, I still like to do some fair use video now and then. I've got some really nice nature footage I may share with the community next week while I'm on vacation.
Feel free to ask if you want help or would like to pick my brain.
