Do I keep skinning XP when Windows 7 arrives?
Friday, October 9, 2009 by CountryYokel | Discussion: Skinning
With the launch date of Windows 7 just around the corner do I keep on making WindowBlinds for XP? I am hoping to get Windows 7 sometime in the near future, as finances allow, so do I add it to my dual boot XP/ Vista computer, something which I have read on these forum does not work too well, or do I replace the XP partition with Windows 7.
I understand that many users of XP who have been reluctant to upgrade to Vista are waiting for 7 to change, (I think I have been one of the few people who actually like Vista) & with all the positive vibes about the new OS from the many who have tried the release candidate I feel that their will be a quick take up, unlike Vista, which has always suffered from a negative press. I understand that Windows 7 is based on the Vista code so that when it comes to driver compatability, etc. most company's software is ready for the release, so there will not be a problem for early users of the system.
Any thoughts on this would help me to decide which way to go in the near future.

The only support I've ever gotten from MS for XP is the ton of patches/fixes they put out on a regular basis. Other than that...nadda...zip...ziltch. So if they stopped "supporting" it I'd just have more space on my hard drive. ![]()

something golden...glowing and transparent.....
....with a fiery red/black glossy...alternative substyle.....
Hehe... wouldn't be a bad idea to include a third option... an eerie grey/white sub-style... for those who are neither here or there.
It mightn't be a bad idea to include a contact no. for Jennifer Love-Hewitt in that sub-style, tho... we might need a ghost whisperer trick or two to get some of those deceased XP fanbois to move on... being their alternative could well be the fiery red/glossy black sub-style. Dunno the other place 'd take the more stubborn ones

At the end of the day, the decision to skin or not skin XP must be yours, as it is for vStyler and others. The idea is that you skin for yourself primarily, and if you (any other skinner) happen to share accomplishments done in XP, then so be it. My thoughts on the matter are not directed at anyone in particular, but looking at the bigger picture, a generalised move away from XP by all parties over shorter rather than a longer time. It needs to happen or computing in many areas will stagnate, particularly in XP, so if all the key players move on, usage trends will eventually alter/follow suit.
Fanboys are not those who can not afford to upgrade, but those who shoot down other OSes/software in flames and sprout the virtues of what they're using... in this case XP, which to the dedicated fanboy is the be all and end all of stable/functional computing... and yes, there a few of them about. I've come across a few over the years... considerably more since the release of Vista. One bloke had "XP Forever" tattooed in an intricate love heart design across his chest... which me thinks is taking it waaaay too far.
The absolute worst fanboi I ever came across, however, was my former next door neighbour, back when I lived in Tasmania... which probably accounts for it, Yup, Wayne would go on and on and on about the virtues of Win 98, then berate and admonish me for using XP: "What d'yer wanna go use that rubbish for," was a frequent remark,,, certainly wasn't a question... and he almost got angry when I was upgrading to Vista. At the same time he'd bought a brand spanking new PC (and not a cheap one, either) with Xp Pro preinstalled.... he reformatted and put Win 98 on it... not even SE, then he came to my place with the disc in hand: "Here, instead of putting that crap on it, try this, it's the best system Microsoft ever made"
Yeah, right... mind you, Wayne was/is peculiar in other ways as well... not gay, just peculiar. ![]()
No need for confusion... well there shouldn't be. Just go to the mirror, take a deep breath and start chanting "I'm a VeestaXPx7 PC user, I'm a VeestaXPx7 PC user...... After about an hour you should be convinced you're a Windows user.
Oh, and don't ask me how you pronounce VeestaXPx7. ![]()

Before the days of vista and (now) Win7, you would see a great deal more creativity in a WB.
Fact is, building a blind is very time comsuming. Skinning for 3 OS's steals time away from doing more for a skin (read several different substyles). Think of it this way: If I do several substyles for a Win 7 blind, I'll want to mirror that in the other 2 versions, which could mean in essence building up to (at least) 9 different skins!
I personally look forward to the day when I can skin for just 1 OS again.

Nah... just the majority. However, some of my fave peculiar people are Taswegians... including yerself. ![]()
I was gonna say Errol Flynn, but then I remembered.... he was far from being not odd... liked to dress up as a pirate and swing from the yardarm with a cutlass between his teeth.

Yup, this is exactly what I've been saying... there's too muck work and resources are spread too thin when 3 are catered for. Hopefully those with an iron grip on XP will take note of your comments above and consider upgrading to Win 7 sooner rather than later.

But no one really explained why the 'fanboy, fanboys or fanbois' name got attached to folks who don't or are not unable to upgrade or update to the next new OS.
I'm not talking about those that want you to go deaf with listening to thier reasons and opinions, those folks are actually few in number.

well, would be nice but I very much doubt folks will consider how much extra work it is for skinners when evaluating OS upgrade.
When i used the term fanboys i was referring to those using 7 not those who havent upgraded, noty sure who else used it and in what context.

XP is still a strong OS and I suspect there are substantially more users (including so called power users) out there than ya'll suspect.
I would not be surprised if MS discontinues support for Vista. It's an embarrassment for them and is just a step above garbage.
If you skinners ignore XP, Stardock will begin to loose its customer base.

I have an XP Home 32 bit system and a Vista Home Premium 64 bit system which will get an upgrade in about 12 days to Win 7 64 bit so I'm just a little confused at to what I am. (Boy that was the wrong thing to type)

I need to apoligize to CountryYokel and do so at this time. I didn't realize what I had done, sorry for taking this off subject. ![]()
So, back to the original question: Do I keep skinning XP when Windows 7 arrives?

Don't worry Philly0381, no need to apologise, you have not gone very far off subject, I have enjoyed reading all the posts, & the dabate about the OS's is all part of me deciding about which ones to skin.
As i said previously I like Vista, but if I had not been left some money I would not have been able to upgrade & would be one of those still using XP. I look forward to trying Windows 7, as a previous poster said, which is best is a matter of opinion.

si esta W7 trabajar para Vista es un trabajo inutil creo que Vista morira antes que XP en poco tiempo
conclusion:
W7 es el futuro, pero XP es una leyenda, siempre seria muy bonito que se trabajara en el amor.

Sounds like they are ... fighting.. with the decision?
I dual boot XP on one home system to test the XP Logons. I use XP Pro at work (can't test logons because of domain).....and "there" I will not upgrade software until I upgrade the hardware. If the economy gets moving again I'll look at doing it next calendar year.
I pre-ordered a copy of X64 Pro for my latop and I got a coupon with the OEM version of Vista x64 I put on my new build.

Dunno why, I've not (intentionally) used the term in that way/context. Tattoo boy and Wayne (@ #63) are fanboys... but a bloke with a limited income, a family to feed and bills to pay is not... he simply can't afford to upgrade every time a new OS is released. Now he might like XP... he might even like it a lot, but that still doesn't make him a fanboi... he simply has no other mainstream choice, he can't afford Vista or Win 7, and certainly not Apple Mac's OS-X.
It could be said that I'm a Vista/Win 7 fanboi because I dislike XP so much and advocate its retirement in favour of Win 7/Vista... but actually I'm not, cos I like Ununtu and would like to try OS-X.
Nah, I'm just an anti-XP fanboi and think the Daleks should exterminate that bastard child of Fisher Price. ![]()
Yeah, they'd be outnumbered by the 'can't afford to upgrades', given today's economic climate, but there's still quite a few of them around. In my local PC store alone, the XP fanbois outnumber to sole Vista/Win7 supporter 4 to 1. OS preferences, likes and dislikes are not something I discuss in there anymore, not with 4 of them arguing the virtues of XP over Vista... you just don't get a word in edgeways.
That's in one place, but if I were to go out looking, I bet that I could easily find one or two (different) XP fanbois every day. Ever since Vista was released on beta and got a bad rep from purportedly knowledgeable writers/industry insiders, XP fanbois have been coming out of the woodwork...moreso than ever before.... and talking about Mac's vs PC.
Yup, only gotta be on a crowded bus and jump up to say: "Hey, I'm a PC and I use Vista!" Like you're gonna get 2 or 3 challengers... 2 or 3 XP fanbois who will decry your choice of OS and proceed to beat the plusses and virtues of XP into you with their tongues... which by now are lathered and foamy due to salivation and the excitement driven drool.... meaning you wouldn't wanna say it in front of Gene Simmons. Heaven forbid he's a XP fanboi as well.

IMO, these are people who won't let go of XP cuz they think Vista is stupid and 7 needs to prove itself.
