Do I keep skinning XP when Windows 7 arrives?
Friday, October 9, 2009 by CountryYokel | Discussion: Skinning
With the launch date of Windows 7 just around the corner do I keep on making WindowBlinds for XP? I am hoping to get Windows 7 sometime in the near future, as finances allow, so do I add it to my dual boot XP/ Vista computer, something which I have read on these forum does not work too well, or do I replace the XP partition with Windows 7.
I understand that many users of XP who have been reluctant to upgrade to Vista are waiting for 7 to change, (I think I have been one of the few people who actually like Vista) & with all the positive vibes about the new OS from the many who have tried the release candidate I feel that their will be a quick take up, unlike Vista, which has always suffered from a negative press. I understand that Windows 7 is based on the Vista code so that when it comes to driver compatability, etc. most company's software is ready for the release, so there will not be a problem for early users of the system.
Any thoughts on this would help me to decide which way to go in the near future.

Only 1 or 2 MODS have XP and I think 1 is a duel boot. When W7 gets here they probably won't have XP anymore.

I'd put up a survey and ask the same question. Many members don't have the resources to migrate to 7 nor to Vista...
If there's no way for a member to put up a poll, maybe ask WC/SD to post the poll as one on the home page.
*edit...for myself, I'll be migrating from Vista to 7. XP is long gone.

XP is a dinosaur and should be made extinct.
Now that's rich... coming from a bloke who was doing a pretty good job at impersonating a dinosaur a while back.

But yeah, XP had its day in the sun, now it's time to move on... to new tech with real potential.
Compared to Win 7, XP is a glorified abacus. ![]()

I would say there is no point in having Vista if you are upgrading to 7. I'll be keeping XP for awhile and it's still my most used system. I've gradually become accustomed to Vista but 7 seems so closely related that I don't see a need to keep Vista.

I ditched XP almost 2 years ago, but when I upgrade to Win 7 I'll put my copy of Vista Home Premium x64 on my spare rig and keep it for processing video while I'm doing other stuff on my main rig.
I'd never consider keeping XP, though.... had 3 copies but put one on a PC I built for my daughter from spare parts, another similarly to my son... leaving one copy to hand on to somebody starting out who needs it, because I'll never ever use it again.

It seems more of a personal choice to me.
If you would no longer have an XP system to test or run it why do it. I still have a working XP system and will continue to update it wiith skins that will run on it.
Once no one is skinning for XP then I will probably look at, well I'm not sure. ![]()

Well, considering at present XP is still be used on around 68% of the world's PC's, I won't be getting rid of it, nor stop skinning it for at least a year. I may consider dumping skinning Vista though, it never really gained a share of the market to speak of and it would make no sense skinning it. So I will probably just skin for XP and Windows 7, but still leave my system triple boot as it is now for other reasons.

Well the main reason a lot of people are looking to move to 7 is due the fact it has a virtual XP Mode as seen here.
But I would not be too concerned with trying to skin that. Plus it takes a given type of CPU with a good amount of ram to run such a Virtual PC.
As far as still skinning xp for people using it. There are going to be a lot of people that do not like 7 and for that matter Vista. Thus they will not move on to a new OS. Mostly those people that are in the business part of using XP do not really plan to change. Fact is they are trying to get MS to keep working with XP for many good reasons.
I do not see XP fading away yet as with millennium or 2000 has in the past. People will have it and keep using it on as many computers as they have.
I've also seen some reports for 7 that it is not a reliable or as fast as they claim it to be. But everyone to his own ideas there. I do know this though. The company I work for is not moving to 7. They will stay with Vista Business as such. Plus XP Pro is still a system of choice in certain places.

Thanks for all the replies, I agree with the majority of you about XP & only have it on my computer so that I can skin it, I use Vista for every thing else.
I suppose that most people who freqent these forums are power users rather than casual users so I would expect the bulk of you to have moved on from XP a long time ago, but by the same token, anyone who bothers to customize their computers are likely to be more than casual users. I can also understand why many firms still use XP (I used to own a small business) but I do not expect they are users of WindowBlinds. I can also see, from personal experience, that not everyone can afford to upgrade, but can afford to purchase WindowBlnds.
So it would seem the best course of action is to go for a triple boot & as LightStar suggests skin XP for at least another year.

I would quit skinning vista before XP but for now I'm skinning all 3, fair amount of people using all 3 atm.
Sounds like they are ... fighting.. with the decision?

I'm gonna drive this XP crate 'till it drops, maybe longer. I'll appreciate any XP skinning that continues, can't imagine that I'm the only one, but ya the world does move forward.

Just looking at the industry right now, the majority of Stardock's customers as far as customization products would have to be individual consumers, and residential computer users have a tendency to, especially in times of recession, make the old work for them instead of moving on to the latest and greatest thing, whatever it is.
Many people are going to continue using XP for years. Mainstream support for it ended only recently, and even taking that out of consideration, there are still people, although the numbers are shrinking, that are still using Windows 98 and ME. Many businesses, and individuals who use their computers for both business and personal use, will likely be sticking with XP for some time in the interests of maintaining compatibility, despite the availability of XP Mode. A note to anyone considering migration with interest in this feature - make sure you select the right version of the OS. Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate are the only versions with access to XP Mode. Most systems purchased at retail will include Home Premium, and will not have access to that feature without upgrading to one of the other versions. There are other ways, but those aren't part of this discussion...
Personally, I've upgraded everything to Windows 7 Professional, as personally, I don't have a need for the extra features included with the Ultimate version. (Our MAPS subscription gave us early access to the RTM.) But for true compatibility, especially in terms of hardware, I am keeping one system running XP.
The fact is that XP will still see a good user base for at least several more years, especially in terms of netbook owners, since most of these that are sold, at least here in the States, include XP Home as the preinstalled operating system. There is already an extensive library of skins available for XP, but to keep the product going strong, I see no reason yet to cease production of skins for XP. Everyone loves shiny new toys.
As more people migrate to Windows 7, there will be a decrease in demand for skins for older versions of the OS, and eventually Stardock will likely drop support in later versions of the software, forcing our hands if nothing else.
The bottom line, unless you're under commission or something, do what you like to do. If you like to skin XP, do it. If you want to develop new eye candy (or something more minimalistic) for 7, then feel free. I, as well other users, will be appreciative of what you create, regardless of which direction you take.

I plan to skin all 3. I use XP on my home desktop, Vista on my laptop and 7 on my work desktop, so I am fortunate enough to have all 3 for now. Truthfully, the only reason I keep XP on my home system is to skin it, so I'll do so as long as that beast hangs on. ![]()

Yup..same here...I'll be using XP till it doesn't work anymore. Why should I get rid of it just because there's a new OS out? This one isn't broken and if no one skins for it...gee...let me see...I have tons of skins to use...but I can still only use one at a time. But when this XP gives up the ghost...I think I'll just go back to the real world. I kind of miss real life anyway. ![]()
