What will the desktop of the future look like?
Monday, October 5, 2009 by Philly0381 | Discussion: OS Customization
I ask the question because I have no idea and I am curious if some of the more experience folks out there have first hand knowledge.
For the most part, even from what I have seen of Windows 7, if would appear the PC desktop is still pretty much 2 dimensional. The only exception that I seem to find is a some third party software for an open source OS, which the name of slips my memory at the moment. ![]()
I would have hoped that with the multi core processors and faster memory and 64 bit systems being common that new and exciting Graphical User Interfaces would have been developed by know. I have seen those peeks at some stuff by Microsoft but when are they going to be available and at what price? And no, touch screen ain't it.
I would really like to see some try at doing 3 diminsional interfaces. I think Stardock has some programs that would benefit from what could be some nice capabilities. Now I'm not saying WindowBlinds, not sure have that would work, but possibly DesktopX could be made a lot more interesting being in the 3D environment. Imagine widgets or gadgets that could be zoomed in or out on. It would allow more items on the desktop without concern for resolution settings.
How about something like a information cube. You have six sides or surfaces in 3D to use for time, weather, systems info, etc., with a zoom function that again would take up less space when not in use.
It seems rather of waste of everyones time with all the advancements in hardware that this technology has not move forward by now.
So those are my thoughts, how about yours? It would be nice to see someone from Stardock reply here, might just give us something to talk about.

I never said designing a ui, read correctly. I'm just very familiar with how it is all put together what areas interact with others and as that compared XP to Vista\7. Got zero to do with ego mate. I do however do ui design work too.
screaming out RUBBISH isn't criticism.. it's trolling.
Thats all.

So a car designer isnt really doing car design because what he "designs" have 4 wheels and a steering wheel? ![]()
Anyway the desktop of the future making it touch isnt viable because working with something where you have to move your hands and arms all the time. I think it will be more of what OCZ released the NIA maybe in conjunction with some sort of holodesk and some voice commands. Or maybe a full immersion where you connect your brain ala Ghost in the shell (that would be cool!!).

The car interface is still the same. 4 wheels, 2 doors (maybe more), a steering wheel, headlights etc..
Despite the way it looks, it is operated the same way isn't it?
Hell, if I want that I'll break out my Wii. ![]()
Can you imagine playin WoW on a holodeck.. (drool)

For all the good things about this community there are still one or two things that ruin it for folks like me and I'm sure for others.
Since this is my thread and I have ownership of it I request all of the folks that can't play nice to just knock it off.

Philly is right. This is his thread and he's upset. Thanx for smoothing it over, v.
I'm still waiting for Philly to gimme my new interface. Hell, with my 62 years of wrinkles, I'll settle for any new face! ![]()

Philly the future computers have very little in a desktop really. Except for what pops up on the screen when it is needed. The newest design is more of the computers that talk back and such. Just about everything has gone to where we do not use a mouse and for that matter a keyboard. Oh icons will always be used in folders and such the like. But as for the start menu - it is gone - no more. So is the taskbar and all related objects you would usually see there.
The touch screen is just the beginning of all this and soon anything you want is just a shout away. Sort of like ask and you shall recieve sort of stuff. Anyway that is where things are going... oh there will always be the gaming systems with little of no what they are today. But they will still have a mouse or gadget like a mouse to use for playing whatever game it is you prefer. But a lot of gaming is looking into the touch type of controls also. Sort of like what ID was wishing for here the other day. Instead of using the mouse to do things - it is a touch pad where you use your fingers to control everything. Then there is another project like with the talking to and fro system with a motion detection system and/or camera. Which captures your movements and relates it to the machine for whatever it is programmed to do. Such as run, walk, sit, jump, turn, and any other movement that it can figure with whatever you might be able to physically do. Ya sounds a bit on the tuff side for being hard to do at an older age or such. But this is what people want. They want to be able to get into whatever the game is in reality almost. Even with whatever there is that is actually being done by their other players and such. More competition with this it seems.
But the future is almost here and I think the last windows to come will have some of this. But there are other companies out there which are trying to out do windows with a better way of using the computer. At this time Windows 8 is about the same as what 7 looks like. Not too much difference yet...
I really believe the touch and talking systems will actually take over in the long run due to the fact it has no desktop and people really just want to see what they want to see on their desktop no matter what it is or does. Meaning we are going to a desktop that is completely open until you tell the system what it is you want to do or want to see and so forth. Then you can interact with it by touching or speaking to the system itself or for that matter so can the other people you are allowing into that system at the sametime such as messengers and so forth. Everything is going more live than it has been with the button pushing of the past. Ya that is the real word for it truely LIVE !

While 3D has a big "coolness" factor attached - I haven't really seen very many examples of them actually being useful in a way meaningful to most people. BumpTop is a nice attempt to do so - but turns out it's only useful for a single task: Sorting documents. And even then, once the coolness wears off, I'm not entirely sure it's more efficient than a file manager. I've actually had BumpTop for a while. But I use it so infrequently - honestly, I'm thinking about uninstalling it.
For one thing, I think BumpTop kills itself by only allowing you to sort your own desktop, not the documents or other folders.
For another, the standard 2D methods seem to work just as well. Especially since Vista and 7 have group and stack views.
To those reading the edit: I made a mistake. I had actually moved my desktop to a separate drive.

Forgive me for stepping on the toes of the all knowing, all exhalted one. I'm just as entitled to say that your comment was rubbish as you are entitled to say it in the first place.
Your artwork is good, your talent for windowblinds is good. But I will be damned if I will kiss your ass because of it. You are not THE only person here that has talent, despite what your ego tells you.
A technicality, Windowblinding isn't UI design. It's changing the appearance of the existing design that is inherent in Windows. Some minor moving items around is allowed, but sorry... you aren't designing a UI.
Once again, your over-bloated ego at work thinking that your graciousness deserves following...
I said nothing to you that wasn't meant in good humor and if the mods decide to ban me or penalize me for defending myself then so be it.
Perhaps I'm not as positive as I used to be, granted. But I don't have to agree on everything said either.Do your part, learn to take some criticizm once in awhile without attacking someone.
