I will be upgrading from WindowsXP to Window7 in October. I have a number of concerns about a smooth transition when it comes to installing Stardock Products. As many of you may know, an upgrade from Xp to W7 means a complete refomat and reinstall of all programs. I am inteminably stuck in a backwater of the internet age and must use a 56k dialup.
From what I have read in some former postings, the archives I create on my xp machine will not de-archive on another operating system or machine. If this is true, this has some rather unplesant ramifications after the upgrade, because I willl be stuck downloading all of my object desktop programs al over again. It would literally be weeks before I have everything downloaded and once again installled.
In another posting, I was lead to believe that if I instead of just downloading a file, but rather, selected the "download and archive" function, that these archives will open on my new operating system and on the new raid array I plan to install at the same time.
Am misiinformed in any way on my two assumptions? What actions are you youself going to take to prepare for the upgrade?

I've not heard or read that .zip files (what Impulse creates when it archives, AFAIK) won't be usable in Win7. Anyone else heard that?
You can spend the next month ( 
) 'downloading and archiving' your Object Desktop apps, then back them up. External USB hard drives are so cheap now, and regular backups are so important, anyway - might be worth looking into getting one of those rather than CD's. Once you've got Win7 & Impulse up & running, you should be able to easily install from the archives.

What I had in mind was your suggestion to "backup and archive" before the transition. But I really don't know if the information I have is current now and whether that would be worth my while. I haven't been able to track down the old posts to reread them.
I have heard recently that you it may soon be posssible to download to a disk, take the disk to another computer, and install from that, but whether that applies in my situation I don't know, or even if it has been implemented yet.

6 of one... Archiving directly to disk (CD) would avoid the middle man, so to speak, but would still simply save a .zip file. Not sure if that direct-to-disc capability is/will be built in to Impulse. Wouldn't hurt - having options is a good thing. But you can effectively do that now, just requires one additional step.

move what archives you have already to another folder - i keep mine on an external
if you archive that which is installed, you can only restore on the same os
use the 'download and archive' function - downloads straight to archive
straight download to archive should allow you to restore on another os - after installing impulse
you might also consider 'impulse anywhere'
it's kinda set up so you can download archives on one computer - say a laptop you can take into town for free wifi - stick the archives on a usb drive and install on the other computer

I would think that you should be able to archieve to a CD on your current computer and then use the CD to upload to your new computer. Lets see what the experts have to say. Being on dialup would make it a very slow process to reinstall the software.
