Naked - [Noir] WB - WIP

Strip it... Strip it good

Wednesday, April 29, 2009 by vStyler | Discussion: Community

After seeing the popularity of transparent themes in the past few months I thought it was time for me to put my own version of the concept together. Hopefully I can do it justice, and provide a high quality Master skin with my own take on it.

The basic concept is a stripped down, very transparent, very fast WB that is perfect for screenshotting and showcasing wallpapers

There will be zero bevels or gradients, all the buttons will be flat and designed to be more like a touch screen interface.

It will have a white text and black text start menu substyle for use with light or dark wallpapers.

Heres a small screeny of what I have after a couple of days, I'll try to expose more as I strip it down.

I hope everyone can get Naked soon

Will all the components have the same ability to switch fonts like Bilbo's DX or will there be a dark and light font version for each like the blinds?

I can do 2 different versions or just one and let everyone change the fonts themselves...but I have to wait for John to finish before I can get started since I don't have the skins just yet.

See, that's exactly what I'm talkin' about.

Now the question is, how hard is that to do in a WinStep theme Steve?  Would the casual user have a difficult time making the switch.  Because if it isn't easy, they lose interest.

I personally know where you can in the Workshelf configuration, but we're talking about folks more on a novice level who are afraid to play with defaults.  Would it be hard for them?  Know what I mean?

Again, depending on the lighting from the background, it can just look like a bunch of glass if the fonts aren't right.

The on-the-fly font switch that Bilbo incorporated into his DX widget was pure genius.  It would be stellar if you were somehow able to integrate this ability into the Xion and WinStep too.

Maybe a Naked WSE dark and light would be better, just more work for you.

From what Giz has explained (in the past) to me...the toughest part is the graphics...altering yet keeping the spirit of the OT.

I didn't get the impression the fonts are hard.

But "Giz the Winstep Wiz" makes things look easy that really aren't....he just is a master of his craft (that's with the 'f', Cp!).

It isn't the degree-age of difficulty with the fonts Doc.  It's more of a matter of if these components such as Pixel-Z's Naked Xion player has only one color font, let's say it's white, then it loses 50% of it's purposely constructed adaptability because it's limited to certain lightings on the background.

And the critical consideration of alpha blending is it's readability on any surface.

So the question I posed was to ask if the ability to switch fonts on the fly is more lucrative, as opposed to merely leaving a novice at the mercy of having to in their mind, hack let's say their WinStep theme to get the correct font for the surface they're currently using.  Or, do you just make two of everything thereby eliminating the issue?  And we know that that's more work on the skinners.

Basically I was asking what was the plan for these complementary components Doc.

vStyler was fully aware of this consideration and that's exactly why he built a substyle with a black font.

Play with some glass components with a white font on dark and bright walls and you'll understand what I mean.

I suppose some apps are easier to give the end user a choice of font color, in WB a substyle is needed, with a widget... a simple button can be implemented, Winstep, i have no idea... and xion.. I think would need a diff. 'mode' xion skin.

Yes its a bit more work for us.. but well worth it if it's a means to an end for the folks that use our work.

Hehe.. thanks Curtis,

Gonna have a word with all the 'porter\skinners' to see if we can get alternate versions of their skins to match the WB light and dark font substyles.

I'm just glad im done! ...

It's not really hard Cp...it's just that you'd have to do it for each module and then the workshelf...starbar...menu...and so on...so I'll just make it easier for everyone and do it myself. Of course there will always be someone that wants something else...so I'll leave that up to them.

Not a problem here John...just have to wait for the finished versions to see what your using. Then it takes a bit to get it all put together.

If that's the case and for the user sake, then it's a wise decision all around bro.

That's what I'm talkin' about!

I know you can change the font and text program wide in Winstep....not sure about the color. But when I get to it I'll just make both text colors...you know how lazy people are..."Ah man....you mean I gotta find the font manager to change my text and font!...Screw that!"

I'm curious as to how are you going to address the fonts.

Well, for OD, I can either include a second .ini file with a black font or the user could just open the .ini file and change the 255 255 255 to 0 0 0 and save it to get the black font.  Which I think is actually easier and I'll probably do that.  (either way, for OD, the user has to do something)  The Xion I can put a button on to have it change from white to black and back again...does that answer your question from my end kind sir?
