Shortcuts jump out of Fences

Monday, April 27, 2009 by jrv72 | Discussion: Fences

Sometimes shortcuts that are in fences hop out. I've seen posts about word documents hopping out, but I think this is a different case. I can create a Fence and a shortcut to an executable (for example, c:\windows\notepad.exe). As best I can tell, this happens if the shortcut in the Fence is selected on the desktop and I lock the desktop (e.g. because I'm walking away from my computer). When I unlock the desktop, the selected shortcut has hopped out of the fence. Other shortcuts in the same fence do not hop out. If I make sure to select a non-Fenced shortcut before locking the desktop, no Fenced icon hops out of a Fence.

I'm using Windows XP Professional, SP3 and the v0.96.1583 beta of Fences.

Here is some more context which may or may not be relevent. I had a heck of a time installing Fences. A long time ago I had experimented a bit with windows active desktop (I didn't inhale). I had created two desktop web pages in addition to the default one. None of these were active when I installed Fences, but Fences wouldn't work properly. I could create the fence, but it would immediately disappear, and I couldn't make any Fences visible on the desktop. What I found was that I had to remove the two desktop web pages in order to get Fences to display at all. I found postings that indicated that Fences doesn't like active desktop, which is what led me to this solution. I wonder if there's some other remnant of the active desktop experiment that causes the fence hopping.
