Broken Startmenu Images?

A fix for this would be appreciated.

Wednesday, March 18, 2009 by WebGizmos | Discussion: Stardock Support General

This is what happens on various skins after opening the startmenu and then clicking the desktop. The latest skins this has happend on has been "Tigris" by Tiggz and the latest subscriber skin "Space." Any ideas or fixes for this would be appreciated. I've deleted the WB4 references in the skin folder which has been suggested but that has not worked.

I think John built outer limit before the last WB/sks update where animating the startbutton glow just became possible.......you may be on to something there, 1nsomn1ac.

Well guys...with version 6.30 everything seems to be working now...so it has something to do with 6.40 thats breaking things...at least for me it is.

I'm glad you got it working,WG. At least now you have the problem narrowed down to  version 6.4. That will make troubleshooting easier for support. The best case scenario is the next update to 6.5 will correct it.

WebGizmos: What kind of system stats are we looking at here?  Have you tried going back to 6.4 since reverting?  If so, did the issue reappear?  Has it been working solidly on 6.3 for you?

I'd like to try and repro on a similarly spec'd machine.

Ok....here's a new one! Applied "Space" and my taskbar filled up with about 30 startbuttons right up against the systray....LOL Is this messed up or what! I think a fresh install of windows is in order.

Ok...I now have another skin with broken images! Can someone please explain what is causing this so I can figure out how to fix it? I just bought Mike Bryants new Alpine skin and it's happening to this one now.

did you ever update those video drivers?

Yeah...everything is alway updated. And it's only certain skins this happens to. My guess is it's something in the skin itself.

That's really weird, WebGizmos. As others have said, my first guess would be video drivers. But, of course, you've already barked up that tree. If it's something in the skin itself, it should happen with every skin I've made in the last few years. I've been making my XP start menus the same way ever since perpixel support was introduced. Perhaps there are some pesky old *.wb4 temp files in the skin folder causing issues somehow? Just a wild guess.

So you think I might have an older WB4 file in there somewhere that could be causing this? If so....can I just delete it? Oh man! I just looked and there are lots of WB4 files in there.

WB4 files are temporary helper files that assist WB with skin performance, I believe. You can delete all of them, and the next time you apply or preview the skin, new ones will be regenerated.

So there's no way to keep those files out of there huh? I just deleted about 10 WB4 files and the startmenu is still broken.

This has happened to me occasionally also, but usually I just reboot and the problem clears up. It seems to happen only when a skin is applied during its design process in SkinStudio 6.  Has not occured using SkinStudio 7 yet though.

I just applied some of your other skins Mike and so far the only one that did the same thing was Airlock. And it's not just your skins...it happens with others as well. And I checked the folders as well and all of them have the WB4 files in them. It just seems weird that it would do this with only a select few skins.

You don't want to keep them out of there permenantly. You just wanted to force WB to generate fresh ones, in case the information in the old ones was out dated or corrupted. If you deleted them, re-applied the skin, and still have the problem, then the issue must be elsewhere.

Ok...deleted those files...rebooted...and it's not doing it now...and Airlock is working as well. Go figure. [insert scratching head smiley]
