Vista x64 start menu/sys tray fix
Tuesday, March 10, 2009 by RogueMafia | Discussion: ObjectDock
Hi, just wanted to drop this on the forum, as many people have had issues with the latest version of Object dock plus having non working start menu and sys tray functions, in Vista x64.
I know many have fixed it by installing SDC, removing objectdock and installing the "old" beta version.
Anyway, after some investigation with the beta I have found the relevant files that you can just drop into your current ObjectDock installation folder and get those functions back, without the hasle of SDC client and reinstalls etc.
It consists of replacing the .exe, and 2 dll's, and adding 2 new dll's from the beta client (no dll registration required) these are from object dock plus, as thats what i have, dont know if it will work with the free version but you can try !
close objectdock plus down, replace the files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\ObjectDock, and then restart your PC.
BEFORE YOU REPLACE THE FILES, RENAME OR BACKUP YOUR ORIGINALS, so you can revert if it gets screwed up.
(this has been edited, I cannot host the files due to licence and redistribution, my post below includes a list of the files to replace)

I did NOT say they don't work on Vista x64. If you feel the need to quote me, do it properly.
Neither OD+ or CursorFX are supported on Vista 64-bit, so writing to support would do me no good. Bashing on my computer knowledge which you don't know anything about won't change anything.

As SD is an Entity that thrives on sales, it would not withhold updates unless they were not ready. It is not in any Money making companies best interest to upset customers. So when they say it's not ready, I trust it is in our best interests that it not being released yet.
Cursor FX and OD work fine on my 64 bit install,Tho I do not get the systray either. But since I dont use it no big deal for me...
CursorFX sys req's:
- Windows Vista/XP/2003/2000 (32-bit)
20MB free drive space
256MB RAM
Impulse must be installed in order to download and update software
- Languages supported:
English, French, German, Italian, Polski, Russian, Spanish, Serbian (srpski) Note: The interface has been localized for these languages, but the documentation and help (where available) will be in English. - Internet access is required to activate copies purchased online. [Details]

That´s why I think it is something else on your computers that cause this problems.
I don't have the problems, I'm one of the few that jumped through all the said hoops to get it working correctly. In fact, I don't even know why you're quoting me.
@HG_Eliminator: I was going to mention that all they have that might contradict otherwise is the measily (32-bit) notice which you pointed out. Considering you actually HAVE to look for it, it isn't really what I would consider adequate notice.
I'm only ticked because 1. it takes an annoying amount of work to get it to work decently on an x64 system and 2. "when it's ready" is more or less just a blanket excuse for "when we can be bothered making time". Yeah, I'm being cynical but we don't even have a vauge idea like "Early '10" or something which is what I refer to 'holding back' - not as in they have it ready and they don't want to give it to us, but rather that they're just taking their sweet time.
It's just silly, considering the amount of people that HAVE paid to use this functionality and then find out it doesn't just work out of the box.

"Out of the box"......read the box description....it's just like system requirements for a PC game.
It says 32bit for a good reason.
If you want to try to get Doom 3 running on a 486 give it a whirl. That too will be outside 'system requirements'....![]()
System requirements are 'requirements'. The fact that some people may succeed with running a/the proggy outside those requirements [eg 64 bit] is pure luck and/or craft ....It is because the proggy will NOT work for all 64 bit users that the platform is NOT included in those 'system requirements'...![]()

Half my argument is that ALL you have to say that it doesn't work on x64 systems is a measily 32bit notice in the system requirements. It's absolutely pathetic and it worries me that other people don't feel the same, considering the amount of people that post in this very forum complaining that they've bought the product, only to find that the feature is "coming soon" according to the program and "whenever we feel like it" according to the forums.
Surely you can't contest that point. I'm happy enough at the moment that I've got it to do what I want but other not so tech savvy people are going to want the files mentioned in the OP so they can quickly get the program to do what THEY want.

You've got to be kidding. You can't even read a 'Requirements' disclaimer.
Tell you what....
1- Get a refund (life is too short).
2- Turn off your computer (it's that pesky "life is too short" shit again).
3- Don't let the forum door hit you in the ass.

Internet, serious business for the forum goers at Stardock. Don't blow this out of proportion when it really isn't needed - I'm just voicing my concerns and feel it's wrong to have one tiny little notice that reads it, considering the amount of people that HAVE posted here saying "WTF IT DOENZT WERK?!" over the period of oh-so-many-months.
Is it really THAT much to ask that a public release is made for JUST x64 to tide us over till whenever the illusive v2.0 is released or at least a little bit of a better warning? Obviously it seems so, considering the amount of negative responses my posts have attracted.
*sigh*

Insulting the entire forum is most likely not a brilliant strategy.

Tongue in cheek. Certain people want to take things too seriously so they seem to take any negativity straight to heart.

I would love this fix...or whatever work around as I haven't been able to get it to work... I uninstalled objectdock plus... let impulse install it... then uninstalled it again to turn the "pre-release" versions available before I tried to install it again. But the problem is that I can't get a newer version of ObjectDock Plus. The version I have now is 1.90 Plus Build 535u. I can't seem to get any beta editions. What can I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

But shouldn't that be mentioned on the Page where one is most likely to decide whether to buy or not, namely this one ?
https://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/downloads.asp#download
There ain't the tiniest hint on 32/64 Windows ...

Thanks for bringing that to light. It is noted on the store page for the product here: https://store.stardock.com/product.aspx?productid=ESD-SDS-W115 and under the system requirements tab here: https://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/

I currently run windows xp pro 64, I would expect any or all windows apps to work in 64 bit (xp/vista) , sense processors that are 32bit are extinct, regardless, OD dos work with limits, that I can handle for a FREE app. My question is this, is the issue fixed in the plus version or not and if not, don't spend the money.

LOL!! I mean... ROFL... Bwahahahaa....
I'm sorry, but apparently you didn't use 64bit long enough to know how things REALLY are... While it's getting better on 64bit support, most apps still run 32bit. I've yet to see the first 64bit game.
Reply #36 Monday, April 6, 2009 10:29 AM
Correct most apps run 32bit; do to back words compatibility that is in 64bit processors (thanks AMD), and OS support for this, this makes for lazy coding of apps, this also do to business that use poorly coded apps, or just out dated. This in turn hurts the non commercial user, and OD is a good app, that could be a great app, I still use it, just as is... but would you run a v8 like a 4cyl.? Got the muscle use it.
Reply #37 Wednesday, April 8, 2009 1:25 PM
its hard to be another program causing OD+ itself to say that the features are not supported in the 64bit version when you try to select those fetures in the options

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like real chutzpah coming onto a Forum owned by Stardock and explaining to folks how to hack the software sold by that firm. The system requirements are clearly stated. Use it or don't. Be patient for official releases of proprietary software, or don't. But don't come on this Forum and tell Stardock how to run it's business in public.
You could have handled this in email/pm with the developers/Moderators/Admins, but you chose a public Forum. Other sites would have exiled you without a warning. Island Dog chose to be kind to you. Be grateful.

So... dunno if ya already seen that, but if you don't wanna make a mess with that fix script, all you have to do is look for:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
And make a shortcut on your dock for that location. Select the Dock Entry properties and activate "Show folder in a menu".
Change the icon and Voila! You've got all your programs listed down...
Obviously, it's not as graphic as the Start Menu, but it's practical, and if you've got the same start-button-showing-error i've had with the script (not so bad, but very uncomfortable)
then it could be useful.
I post this, 'cause I've haven't seen it before... Hope is useful for you.
Regards.
Gens.

I feel the pain of the people complaining about stardock.....I have been using their software as an OD subscriber for a while now....they are very good at teasing their customers with the promise or implication that they will soon have updated software and never or after a very long wait they finally post an update....
WinFX-----been waiting for a vista compatible version for ever.
OD+-------same thing.....if they have a beta version through SDC then why not have it available on Impulse?
They seem to abandon their long time customers who patiently wait for updates to current programs but instead they work on new software for Windows 7......I am sure there are a lot of us that are very interested in software that works on XP or Vista......and not for 7.
I for one will not be resubscribing when mine expires......They have made to many "coming soon" statements then never produce anything.......so if you buy the OD software thinking that with patience you will be rewarded.......prepare to be let down over and over again....I won't be fooled again.
