Strange Sidebar issue with Windows 7...

Thursday, March 5, 2009 by valp666@msn.com | Discussion: Object Desktop

Just stumbled across an interesting issue with Windows 7 and "some" Object Desktop component. Maybe...

I'm still working the issue and will report my final root cause analisys, but I beleive that one of the following may be breaking the Sidebar in Win7: CursorFX, Icon Packager or LogonStudio Vista. I just did an upgrade test of Win7 beta, technet release, and Had the new sidebar until I went and reinstalled the above apps from Impulse.

Now sidebar.exe won't load, and I can't even use the control panel applet to view gadgets. No error or anythingg simple no sidebar and nothing in TaskMan either. Ditto for Applications log in event viewer.

Anyone seen this, or able to reproduce it?

Once I get a chance to rollback and test one-by-one I'll post what I find.

Hawk, thanks. I didn't try W7 myself...mostly out of fear I'd louse up the balance I have where 'everything works'. I do think that folks like you with the savvy to be able to do this stuff perform an invaluable service to Stardock (and MS) in the development of SD software. I'm just not 'ejikated' enough to do it without five or six Gurus around to help save the id10T (me) when I screw everything up in spades.

So, I'm giving you karma...and wish I could do more since I'll probably end up migrating to 7 when it's judged stable and SD works correctly on it. Thanks, Hawkeye, for your savvy!

Dr, thanks for the karma and kind words.

I did a System Resore to before the install of Impulse and the other progrrmas and sure enouhg the sidebar came back. I then installed Impulse and no problem. Next I installed CursorFX and still the sidebar is all goodness. Then I installed Icon Packager and the sidebar is still there.

Fances anyone? I think I'll stay where I am and not install fences. But someone at Stardock who is already or will be starting to do compat testing might want to take a special look at fences and the new sidebar engine, or even the combination of Icon Packager, Fences and the new sidebar.

Just wanted to share this with y'all. Personally I'm adding Fances to the "not with Windows 7" list for now.

First, there is no sidebar in Windows 7.  The gadgets can be placed anywhere on the desktop.  Second, I'm running the 7057 build of Windows 7 with Fences, and have absolutely no issues with my gadgets or Fences.

There is still a sidebar.exe. So strictly speaking you are wrong it is still there. I simply no longer defines an area in which it is running but rather is running over the entire desktop.

I'm running Win 7 64 bit with Fences, CursorFX, WB 7, IP 5 and LogonStudio Vista and no problems at all with sidebar.exe or any of the Stardock programs.

Sidebar gadgets specifically may have an issue with the Windows 7 incarnation of sidebar.exe.  Normal DX Gadgets/Widgets/etc. should be unaffected.

Having a similar problem here in Windows 7 build 7600.

The menu option, when i right click on desktop>View>Show Gadgets (Which was below "Show desktop icons") is simply not present. It was there before i installed Fences.

Am able to see the option in Safe mode though.

Looking forward for any suggestions.
