Vista SP2 Release Candidate available to the public

Wednesday, March 4, 2009 by DaveBax | Discussion: New Releases

Microsoft just released vista SP2 RC. I have installed it on my computer and have had no problems. The tech forums have all reported good things about it and say that little if anything will be added to the final release.

[quote who="Erk." reply="11" id="2091474"]No urge to see if I can fly, either.

Flying is actually quite simple.

It's merely a matter of throwing one's self at the ground

....and missing.

Dunno about that... but the impact forced loose an enormous curried cabbage bark... and I suffered a slight hearing loss as a result.

because one is now a paying customer, not a beta tester

Actually you agree to be a beta tester by installing beta software... So you become a paying beta tester... *Tough luck, live with it.

Actually, NO!   I have not installed SP2 because I will NOT have text superimposed on the desktop of an OS I paid for.

Like I said before, the dementia's not that bad as yet that I need a visual reminder of which OS version I'm running... so it is unnecessary and an impostion on the part of Microsoft.

By all means, let them put desktop markers on beta OSes. In that case, I AM a beta tester and I haven't paid for it... but in the case of a licensed OS I HAVE paid for, I have the greater equity because the service pack is a much smaller part of the bigger picture, and thus, I should have the greater say as to what is displayed on MY already licensed and paid for desktop.

Liken it, then, to having bought a new car in the colour of your choice and taking it in for its first sevice.  Would you tolerate them putting the maker's name and revised model number in prominent (pink) lettering all over your duco because it's the new company colour and they'd made a few modifications to the factory standard while it was in the service bay?

I don't think so!  And I object to MS placing revised edition identification on my desktop for the very same reason... that's not what I signed up for when I purchased my copy of Vista and it is aesthetically abhorrent.  So yes, I have the right to protest it.

Oh, and BTW, thanks for your responses... I haven't had a good rant/bitch session in a while, and your taunts/jibes allowed for the release of some pent up frustration... that may or may not have later required getting out the strait jacket.

Actually, I don't see what M$ gains by doing that...it seems superfluous and needlessly provocative as well as obnoxious to me.

I see no harm in having MS notate on the desktop that an install is a Beta ver.  Hopefully it'll be a reminder to people using it that if you strike an issue it's not actually MS's fault with a flawed Pack release but just part of its/their on-going bug-hunting.

I think if anyone finds the tagging obnoxious they really should rethink their desire/s to run beta software of any kind.

Bugger going into the kitchen... not my domain.

As for the "tagging", I noticed somebody else was complaining so jumped on the bandwagon... boredom, you know.

Actually, I'm running the Win 7 beta with version tagging on the desktop, and to be honest, I hardly notice it's there.

So! Would someone kindly remind me what the fuss was all about.

Some people just like to have more vista bashing material, so MS is just providing them with more things to stupidly bash about.

I love Vista, it tells me it cant shutdown because the shutdown process is still running.......great huh?

OK enough complaining about the logo on the desktop.   Does the Service Pack actually do anything? When it  finally comes out is it worth the upgrade?

Now would that be the X-rated magician who does peculiar things with eggs during his act?

Pretty amazing how he can un-lay... make an ostrich egg disappear.

Now that was a bit of double Dutch if ever I've seen it, but don't on't worry about me, Mick... I've known all along that MS puts tags on beta software, and that I can opt not to install it, but I've all this pent up frustration and the beta tagging seemed as good as an excuse as any to vent some of it.

According to the Windows blog page, this service pack is intended to tweak/add to various elements of Vista, (more details here) rather than increase speed and/or performance... which were addressed in SP1.  For example, bluetooth, blueray and wi-fi support has been included and/or upgraded.  Some of these items have been previously released as standalone packages with Windows Update; however, I read nothing that claims over-all speed/performance increases for Vista in SP2.

tech stuff is for you young whippersnappers!

well us young whippersnappers have been testing more than just sp2rc1 and so forth for a very long time now Doc.

IE8 rc1 has beenupdated and now works very well. To say the least it out runs my firefox ... supports java again and seems better than ever.

Actually you guys better get on it - this is all due for final release here very soon now.

Sad thing too is IE8 is not skinned as it was with 7 in Vista. Then very soon we move on too the next windows.

So best you go buy a new computer with win 7 and all the goodies... heheeheeee!
