Windows 7... anyone?

Wednesday, January 28, 2009 by Smaky | Discussion: DeskScapes

I have just tried Deskapes under Windows 7 (64 bits) unfortunately all I got was a dialog stating that Desktop Windows Manager is not running.... tried to find it in Administrative Tools->Services but it seems the process was renamed or otherwise replaced by something else in Windows 7... so, no Dreams... snif... snif.

Is this only me?

Is there a product path for SD apps under Windows 7 now?

So far there is a beta release for WindowBlinds 7 available to Object Desktop subscribers, but no other public updates that add Win 7 support.  More info on other releases will be posted when available.

You can expect betas of SkinStudio and IconPackager in the near future.

I know this might be a useless question to ask Zubaz, but I have talked with several people on this and they all agree.  Is there any way, since you are redoing SKS for Win 7 anyway, that it could be released in separate versions for each OS instead off an all-in-one as it is now?  Sure would make things a LOT easier.  Separate (and intuitive) versions for XP, Vista and Win 7 would be great!  Any other opinions out there, I hope?

Or maybe even just separate working areas inside a single SKS, i.e. click XP to work on all XP stuff, Vista to work Vista etc., would be great too.

Yeah that'd be nice but I'm not holding my breath

This is a more probable outcome.  Creating 3 completely different versions would become rather costly.

Stardock is stupid for waiting... Everyone else is already pushing Windows 7 Releases, Windows 7 is going LIVE and to the public in OCT 2009 and the RTM for developers has laready been released! Stay Blind, SD!!! That's how you keep your customers happy.

While we're stuck waiting for a beta of Deskscape for Win7 is there an easy way to convert *.dream files to either WMV or MPG format? I found a fix by Orbit30 that will allow those to run as desktop but unfortunatly it won't do Dream files

Who says we're waiting?  Just because no public betas have been released doesn't mean things aren't in development.

...Everyone else is already pushing Windows 7 Releases...

I seem to remember a saying about a bridge...

Whats the diff between Deskscape free and the one on impulse? Also where would I find it? Might just give it a shot if a beta isn't going to happen soon. I miss my moving walls. Found a hack by Orbit30 but that only works with mpgs not dream files

the v2.5 on impulse wont work maybe it is looking for a reg file from vista or something and if you go to the deskscape home page it has the v1.02 deskscape software for downlaod under vista ultimate "i think because it's a standalone program" that is why v1.02 works

OK... maybe I'm desperate, but I can't wait any longer for Deskscapes to run on Win 7... RTM is just a couple of weeks away. I hope it will be ready then!

Well now that Windows 7 has been RTM for a while now, released through MSDN, Technet and MSDNAA and that exact version is going to be thrown on the DVDs landing in the store shelves in October...is there something more..."specific" about an updated Version of DeskScapes for Windows 7? Can we get our hopes up?
