WinCustomize 2K9 brainstorming

The end of WC2K5 is here. WC2K9 awaits

Thursday, January 8, 2009 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Assuming the subscription drive ends as it is going, what is going to happen?

This is all tentative brainstorming and will be altered based on your feedback.

I. Subscriptions:

1. Master Skins will remain at a discount.

2. There will be a lot more master skin content than there is today as inspired work that's available via MyColors will also be made available in parts as Master Skins. This process will begin sooner rather than later.

3. There will be a new WC browser that will be integrated into Impulse. This browser will only handle Stardock programs and wallpapers.

4. There will be two tiers of subscriptions.  A new $9.95 Basic subscription will give 1 year of access to unlimited downloads and no ads.  The $19.95 suscription will give users discounts on premium content and WC subscriber skins.

5. The current $29.95 subscription that people have will be transformed into a 2-year (so those who buy a subscription between now and then will really make out or people who already have one).

6. All subscriber resources will be handled through Impulse.

II. Site Design

1. The forums will be the same with just some cosmetic changes.

2. There will no longer be a gallery listing on most pages. A Gallery page will let people get to the galleries but the home page won't list a bunch of skin galleries.

3.  The home page will fbe greatly simplified and look very differnt from today (the whole site will look totally different).

4. The gallery page will only focus on Stardock relatd items and wallpaper. Other items fall into an "other" link.

5. Wallpaper moderation as we know it will likely disappear. Instead, we will likely move forward towards a moderator recommended option.

6. Galleries will default to only showing moderator recommended items or items in which at least N users have recommended.

7. The rating system as we know it will likely disappear being replaced by the recommended option. What we'll probably brand the recommend.

8. The recommend option will probably be labeled "Like it" and "Love it".  If a moderator recommends it (likes it or loves it) then it will show up by default. Users will be able to easily change their filtering.  Stars won't be displayed anymore. Just the # of "like it" and "love" by it.

9. Individual galleries won't have a column showing other galleries. A given gallery will focus just on things relevant to that gallery.

Im not certain, but a sugestion is maybe they could still be used to show the items that arent recomended to be seen by default in the main gallery?

Also I think they could use sprucing up, maybe tie in to our posts ,friends list etc like in the Impulse community tab, listing recent posts. replys, blogs, friends, popular blogs, articles, dashboard, etc.. I feel the Impulse community tab is very inviting, informative and think our personal pages should more resemble this style of format. To me it Just looks/feels more cozy.

Maybe even adding "pick and choose" elements to customize the experience, like weather or time in your time zone, a visit counter, etc. This may even be the opportune place for WC to allow subscribers to select what non SD Galleires they want to see. One could select like LiteStep, and now your Personal page shows a Small window like section with a few thumbs of the most recent LiteStep skins uploaded, or Winamp, etc adding as many as you like to your personal page. With the ability to load the corresponding library by clicking on the items in the window.

These are a few Ideas I had. Feel free to post your own ideas, Brad did say they want feed back on things as to make the site a better user experience for the Community.

Also will the Subscribers be able to tone down the number of regular as well as SD adds they see if any? I know it will be a SD primary site for distribution etc., but I was curious as to if Subscribers will still be able to turn off any, or all adds. To many here, this is one of the Primary benefits to Subscribing to WC other than contributing to the site as a community and unlimited downloads.

My Feedback

1. For Wincustomize forums

a> There should be polls for users to create... Like, if someone asks which is best antivirus? He gets 100s of answers(puzzles).

If there are polls one can compare the result...

b> Use of adult words should be banned. Using such words spoils the dignity and triggers feuds.

c> It should not take much time or bandwidth to render.

2. For Wincustomize Skin Site

a> Please don't use flash based navigation menus, they take time to load...

b> Please don't devoid your consumers of rating.. You might like to introoduce two types of ratings:

i... Editors Rating  ii... subscribers Rating

c> Personal skins should show up on skinners sites as they are now...

3. About Karma

Its quite strange that 'karma' has been taken from Indian mythology and you don't listen an Indian. Karma is always of two types.. Good +ve karma and bad -ve karma. Introducing two types of karma will check people from crossing their limits.

Like, if GOD had only made Heavens and no hell.. then all people will do bad or good as it wouldn't matter....so there is hell to check the bad-phillics...

SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH......

Thanks...

all sounds great....

the two tiers of subscripton idea is excellect....the $9.95...ideal to get first time subscribers in.....and for students or people a bit cash strapped....much easier to justify...

sounds like an interesting direction....

the 10 buck one is perfect for someone like myself, who doesn't use any of sub skins...

I use windowblinds (skinning) and the forums. I don't use flash nor impulse. After the poop hits the fan will I still be able to upload/download skins and participate in the forums without using impulse or flash.

Ok Thank you Brad! This is a lot better reading and I can figure where things will go...

Think I'm gona get another few years here and add a few more to my already Object Desktop Ultimate account also.

Got to plan for Win 7 and Win 8 futures with added desktop designs as such I've always done here with Wincustomize and Stardock as usually I do.

I actually hate the Win 7 desktop... terrible start menu and the tray along with the task bar is far fetched completely. Maybe at some later date I'll figure when they get more controls for changing things in mind for that OS. But my real in mind idea is for 64 bit Win 8 to be worked up asap.

My Vista still out does Win 7 here and as I said don't care much for Win7  at the moment. (got it on a seperate boot OS on same machine).

But this being where WC Stardock is going - I like it ... could be better ... even though a lot of people are having a hard time with things. Eco is not as good as before and I do not expect things to get better anytime soon either. Not saying this for myself - but for a lot of others who are out of work and trying hard to get back in a good groove.

Thank you Brad and go Stardock!

Erk.

I think more will be overjoyed about seeing it gone. (Most mods will!)
Some use it the way it's ment to be use, but sadly some use it to 'get to' the skinner by rating low. (Go after the man, not the ball.)
We've also see the "I don't care about the skin. I just want to be highest on the rating scoreboard" type of people - aka drive-by rating, rating the skin purely based on the preview, or simply just for the sake of rating.

IMO the rating system has done more bad than good.

Anti-flash and Impulse? Why?

anti-flash? not quite however the use of flash for advertising detracts from my web surfing experience. easier to eliminate (disable) it than enable/disable/enable,etc. I have a separate browser that I use for viewing video content.

anti-Impulse; possibly. My impression of this program is that it is a software management/control and payment program, and that it requires flash to operate correctly. While this may be something good for SC it does not bring anything new to my site experience and in fact may eliminate me as a member. You all have been touting Impulse as the best thing since dark chocolate and have attempted various, not so subtle methods to get people to install this program. The more that you push something at people the more people will pull back.

AND, about the subsciption drive. I hope you make it but I don't think it really matters. SC wants to fold WC under their umbrella and even if you are able to purchase the new server, it will just be something else down the road. If SC was serious about the viability of WC they'd be putting up the cash for the server. I thought about subscribing but for the cost and, for me, getting another program that I probably won't use and have to install Impulse and enable flash is a little steep. Again, I don't really use much of the site but the community would really be missed. I would consider a reasonable membership fee without all the bells and whistles or hoops to jump through just to help maintain that. You can't sell me on something I have strong objections to.

The cynic in me isn't easily impressed so when I mention that I find the WC community special, that's a very high compliment.

I would not think the Forums would become "Browser specific" nor the site for that matter. One can currently visit the Impulse forums with any browser. http://forums.impulsedriven.com/recent

To make WC,forums etc. Impulse browser only, would be unwise. While the current customer base would most likely have Impulse installed, the rest of the world would be unable to see it, as they would not have impulse installed. I really dont think SD would want to keep one of its sales assets, hidden from potential customers.

No.  IE6 is a dying browser (that attained its peak in usage share during 2002 and 2003) and the requiers unique coding just to keep it functional with more modern (and standard) browsers.
