Seriously though,I hope things go smoothly for you.Personally,I like Vista simply because it works for me.I have no tips for networking but my mothers XP  and Vista rigs were networked(wireless) and seemed to work quite well together.

Howdy Jim, my son's Laptop is Vista and I use netgear to run my network at home/work, all on XP, all I did was look for the network on his wireless built in connection, type in my password and hey presto, his Vista laptop was jacked right in alongside all of my XP Desktops, no problem, I dunno if this helps or not, but it wasn't quite the itch you refered to earlier Ha Ha...cheers Jim, and while I have your undivided attention, I would just like to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Godspeed and Godbless my friend, have a great one....your friend The Thug

TweakVista can be your best friend as you start with Vista.  Do it.

Well I had Vista on my laptop when I had the old PC with XP and when I would try to access Vista things from my XP rig, I was told I did not have permission to access. The shared folders. Right now, I can't access MY Music folder on Vista, FROM Vista. Vista won't let me access my own My Music folder....I hate Vista!!!!

The forums are screwed...lol. The enter key does nothing but make a ding noise. Anyway, I have used Tweak Vista to turn off UAC. Will it help with permissions, and networking?  I will Do It...Thanx!

As far as sharing . .set up through  Control panel | Network and Sharing Center  then you can right click on a folder to share easily.

I had the same problem like you said above and to add to that i could not print things with the network printer.

How I solved it. Some people may laugh.

I installed windows live one care anti virus and firewall.  All problems solved using Live one care.

I used the trial for live one care solved all network and printer problems. I was sold on it and have had no problems with anti virus or firewall issues.

I am not trying to sell you live one care but worked for me.

Head ache was gone as soon as i installed it.

im sorry you have vista..i mean congrats mate     wow she bought comp just for that? amazing. sounds like a swell person.  ive had so much trouble with vista in past but still i hold onto it. i belong to a vista forum, if need me to relay any info i can do that for you

I splurged out yesterday and got the missus a Compaq Presario CQ60-120TU with a 1.6ghz Celeron dual core, 2gb RAM. 160gb HDD and Intel Graphic Media Accelerator 4500 MHD.  It says on the box that it has Vista Home Basic installed but it looks an awful lot like Home Premium to me.

It's funny, I go out to buy a TV, Air-con unit, a digital camera and a 5.1 sound system and come home with a laptop as well... the whole lot came in at under AUD$2200, and I ain't bitching none cos I got a good deal on the entire package for the bulk buy and get $200 off my next purchase into the bargain.

I fixed my printing problems by setting up an XP file and print server in the back bedroom. Now everyone in the house can access the printer and media collection. Cool thing is I can even access my mp3's wirelessly with my pocket PC while mowing the yard. 

i don't know why vista has the the my music, my pictures, my documents, my videos, and other 'my' folders. you can't use them! instead, use the music, pictures, documents, videos and other non-my folders.

File and network sharing is so much earier on vista in my opinion

Printer sharing - just make sure you and the laptop are on the same workgroup - enable printer sharing in the network area and set it on the laptop - its simple

File sharing - much the same - you can right click the folder and go to sharing options

The key is the workgroup on vista - as long as this is fine the rest falls into place

I have found networking with Vista very easy. Just turn on network discovery, and you should be able to see every machine accessable. You can also map other computers user accounts as drives. If you have any specific problems or questions, you can e-mail me.

Yeah, it was the least I could do after all she has done/given me... not ter menshun 'avin' t' tolerate me curried cabbage barks all these years.

A decent camera is something she has been wanting for a while now, being the piss-farty thing she was using was only 3.2 pixels and bugger all zoom to speak of, so it was a given that we'd replace that this Xmas.  The laptop, however, took her quite by surprise and she's all over the moon about it.  While it is something she has wanted ever since being hospitalised last year and not getting her PC fix, I decided that she had waited long enough and just got it cos the deal was just too hard to pass up while I was in the spending mood... and an added bonus is that I get $100 caskback from Compaq as well

Both items will come in very handy in early Feb 09 as mrs starkers is going to Tasmania for a month to be with her daughter, who is expecting a baby around about then.  As I will not be going (my step-daughter still hates my guts for forcing her 3 years ago to recant a so-called rape story to stop a man being convicted of a crime he did not commit), mrs starkers will be able to keep in touch and send me photos of our new grandchild taken on her new camera via her new laptop.  Who knows, maybe one day the girl will realise it was the right thing to do and forgive me for it, so that I too may see the child first-hand.  We'll see, but in the meantime I'll stay at home so as to not upset the apple cart, rock the boat or throw a spanner in the works.

On a different note, I've hooked up my second rig with XP Pro on it to the new TV...and like WOW, it really is something to see our games in all their glory on a 32" screen... and the 5.1 surround sound is absolutely superb through this new system, so it's a totally immersive experience and I don't see the rig ever being hooked up to the 19" again.
