Vista is gone - but it went down kicking and screaming

Saturday, December 6, 2008 by Fuzzy Logic | Discussion: Personal Computing

Some time ago I decided I'd had enough of Vista and would go back to XP. After 2 BSODS and explorer crashing when I tried to rename a file, I decided now was the time.

Sounds easy... I disconected 3 of my four drives, partitioned and formatted my O/S drive, and started the XP install procedure. Hmmm, evertime I got to the part where I expected it to say 'Press any key to boot from disk...' it just went straight into setup again. Nothing I did to the drive with either formatting or partitioning would get past this. Clearly, Vista still had it's grubby little paws on this disk.

So, back to basics. Thankfully when I built this pc I kept a floppy drive... Out came my Windows98 boot disk and straight into DOS. From there I used my equally ancient Killdisk. It took an hour and a half for Killdisk to finish, but it took Vista and erased its ass. Vista is no more, it has ceased to be - it is an ex O/S.

XP installed as smooth as ever. So here I am, in an O/S which so far has no drivers or programs installed. I'll get to that later. Meanwhile I can stick two fingers up (in the form of a 'V') to Vista. Hasta la Vista Vista, as they say

eh...what the heck?

i run server 2008. all the fun, none of the pain. and as far as start menu organization goes, most of my forays into the start menu ends where the instant search bar begins. that is damn cool-and screws me up every time i go for it on a non-vista machine. i do not miss xp

You have to wait for a while, to make sure that nobody notices you, and then strike when they least expect it.

I kicked that ugly vista's behind today and reinstalled XP.... 6+ months on vista... and 2 OS reinstalls... ends with 15+ BSODS a day telling me i have a HW problem.. fine do a repair from cd....sez its all good and all is fine and wont boot nomore!! i gave up on it and installed XP it is like im falling inlove all over again, like seeing a good old friend. Everything goes so smooth and is so fast boot time is awesome compared to a fresh vista install....... no UAC no wizardry snares leading you deep into the noob jungle and just confuses you.... ahhh vista users should try this

In two years with Vista I've had 1 BSOD due to a RAM chip frying, i.e. none because of Vista.  I can only assume that people who are having all these alleged issues are practicing poor computer maintenance habits or attributing problems from other software, or hardware, to "evil Microsoft."

or...

The people that have had good success are lucky to have all their hardware and software to work compatibly. A blind squirrel..... A broken clock....

Hey Fuzzy!,

Kind of like I was talking about in the chat this afternoon with my son.  He's running a P4 with Hyperthreading a 1GB of RAM.  Originally, I had my Vista copy on his machine (when it was 32-Bit Home Premium)..  I used anytime upgrade to go to Ultimate and once Ultimate was on...  I had nothing but headaches..  But, since I'm Microsoft Certified in Vista in several different levels..  I just dealt with it.  In your case, you did the right thing.  However, even with my old hardware I never seen a BSOD with Vista.

Now that I have my "new" machine..  My HP Slimline S3620F..  I upgraded my Vista license to 64-Bit and put my XP Pro copy on my sons machine..  Either way, they are both pretty good..  I've said it once and said it 900 times..  You will eventually need to upgrade.  In your case, Windows 7 will be a great opportunity.  Don't be afraid, it won't be nearly as hardware demanding as Vista, nor cause you the headaches.

I HATE VISTA!

My bf wants to "upgrade" his XP into Vista and I refussseee! Vista is the only windows program that made me want to spend extra money to downgrade it back to XP.

I will never ever ever ever install Vista into my comp ever ever ever again.

That's what I said. And then I had to buy a new computer.

VISTA IS DEAD!

What a load of old bollocks!  Vista runs great on decent equipment and with SP1 is far more stable than XP ever was.... what's more, it looks prettier than that Fisher Price look MS had the audacity to infflict upon users of XP.

I've been using Vista since the 1st public beta was released and I only ever had one BSOD, and that was due to a faulty graphics card.  Moreover, I've been running Vista Home Premium x64 for about a year and only ever had freeze-up if I ran *say* a video recorder; a video converter; TV on my second monitor and had a browser or 2 open, but that wasn't the fault of Vista.... my CPU wasn't up for it and I over-taxed it..... doesn't happen now I have an AMD Phenom II x4 920 with 8 gigs of RAM.

Sure Vista requires better than average hardware, but isn't that the way PC's are going anyway.... faster, more powerful machines with high-end graphics.  Seems to me MS wanted to keep up with the times, and the only reason Vista wasn't the success it should have been is that there were so many Neanderthals running their beloved XPee on Stone-Age equipment who just wouldn't let go and move into the new technological era.

Funny thing, that, I recall many saying that XP would have to be prised from their cold dead hands, and a lot of 'em aren't dead, yet they're quite happily running Vista these days on decent rigs that perform beyond their widest dreams, and thus are glad they upgraded from their old 486's, P2's  and rigs powered by hamsters in wheels.  Yup, progress is a marvellous thing, but I still see detractors and naysayers coming out of the woodwork to put the carbosh on Win 7, a far superior OS to Vista and all that came before it.

Win 7 is faster and less hardware intensive because MS listened to the hamster runners who still wanna keep their machines from the Dark Ages, but sadly, that won't be enough to win sime hardcore XPers over.  Nope, Win 7 doesn't have the cute puppy while doing searches, so it'll get knocked on the head straight away.

Oh well, if they want to hang on to what should be a Museum of Antiquity piece, that's their choice, I guess.  Me, well I'm gonna drink a few less shandies and cut back on my food intake (need to lose weight anyhow) so I can afford Win 7 when it goes on sale.

Orodum
really?  I have Vista and haven't really had any problems.

Yeha i am like you. I hear ALOT of people say they have issues with Vista but i never see them. I personally want Windows 7 more than the next guy because its "Vista" without the "BS". But still i can't complain about vista. I run it flawlessly.

Just curious for people who can't run it... what are your specs? Vista has been known to "not run the best when not on a full-top notch machine" (please don't flame me for that .. not being insulting just quoting one of my "Windows IT Pro" magazines where a guy wrote about Vista).

My system specs:

Processor:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.7GHz
Memory:
CORSAIR 4GB (4094MB) DDR2 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel
Hard Drive:
Intel X25-M 80GB Sold-State Drive (SSD)
Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB
Monitor:
Samsung 22' Widescreen
Sound Card:
Realtek High Definition Audio
Speakers/Headphones:
Keyboard:
Mouse:
Razer Lachesis (4000 dpi)
Mouse Surface:
Operating System:
Windows Vista™ Ultimate (64-Bit)
Motherboard:
XFX MB-N780-ISH9 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI Intel Motherboard

And i can run it flawlessly. Whats your specs OP?

Whats your specs

I was running Vista Ultimate x86 on a AMD Athlon x2 4600 @ 3.4ghz and just 2gigs of DDR2 800, with a nvidia 7800GTS and it ran well.

Current Specs

CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 920  @ 2.8ghz.

RASM: Corsair DDR2 800 x 8gb

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3

GPU: Galaxy 9800GT x 1gb

x64 OS Drive: Seagate 500gb @ 7200

x86 OS Drive: Western Digital 500gb @ 7200

x64 Win7 Drive Western Digital 500gb @ 7200

Sound: Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Fatality Pro.

Well that's the important stuff, and both Vista Ultimate x86, Vista Home Premuim x64 run very well on it... and Win 7 totally flies on it.

Ah, but it will be again after March 2010... the RC goes into 2 hourly shutdowns and will be phased out shortly thereafter.

But yeah, Win 7 x64 does rock.... and IS on my shopping list.
