Wallpaper Tips: Resolutions

Give choices for resolutions.

Thursday, November 13, 2008 by Island Dog | Discussion: WinCustomize News

I just got another monitor the other week, and in trying to find some wallpapers for it, I noticed it’s getting difficult to find wallpapers in a variety of sizes on WinCustomize.  It’s not because of a lack of search feature, it’s just because many of the wallpapers that are submitted only include one resolution, and sometimes a very odd resolution.

I also don’t see a lot of artists listing the resolutions that they are uploading.  I’m just pointing this out as people have been asking how to improve their wallpaper submissions.  With the huge variety of monitors, and widescreens becoming ever more popular, I wanted to offer some tips for wallpaper submissions.

Common wallpaper resolutions:

(Standard)

  • 800x600
  • 1024x768
  • 1280x1024
  • 1600x1200

(Widescreen)

  • 1280x800
  • 1440x900
  • 1680x1050
  • 1920x1200

These are by no means required, and there are many more resolutions out there, but these are what are common today.  You can create a pack of wallpapers and put them in a .zip file to upload.  Remember, similar wallpapers (variations in colors, etc.) should also be uploaded in packs as well.

Hope this helps, as having more resolutions will appeal to a bigger audience.

IT's d be nice to have but I feel compelled to point out taht neither this site, nor dA, is a wallpaper site. It's a skinning site with a wallpaper section.

It's a DesktopX site...lol..wink, wink.

I just uploaded a set using the above sizes. It is called Hole in the World.  Check it out!

And, on the fringe, I just upgraded my system to a 3840x1024 triple monitor setup. Try finding wallpapers for that!

What would be useful is if the wallpaper section on this site offered (forced?) the ability to allow uploaders to indicate available sizes, and offered the ability to downloaders to filter on size.

I don't understand how any wallpaper site (this one, DeviantArt, etc...) can not provide this seemingly necessary and incredibly useful feature...

I ran that resolution for a long time and I will get a list walls together and post em up for you and also some links...  maybe this week.  Keep a look out for it.  Gemerally I made my own.

Correct...but lets not forget, that wallpapers should be made the largest they can be for each ratio... that way they reduce just fine. But if someone makes an 800x600 wallpaper, it can not be resized larger without a lot of pixelization.
Also Irfanview is free and an excellent program for quick resizing among other things. I have used this program for years.

thank you for pointing that out, i should have made refrence to that.  Thanks

FWIW, I render three sizes (2560x1600 (Widescreen 16:10), 1600x1200 (Fullscreen 4:3), and 1280x1024 (Fullscreen 5:4)) if I'm doing an image that will be a screen-wide WP. If I'm doing a single-image that's not screen-wide (IOW, a 'centered/offset' single image or a multiple image composite) WP I render the image(s) at 1600x1600 (the largest size needed) and compose/resize down from that. 2560x1600 covers screen sizes 2560x1600, 1440x900, 1920x1200, 1680x1050, and 1280x800. 1600x1200 covers screen sizes 1600x1200, 1400x1050, 1280x960, 1024x768,and 800x600. 1280x1024 covers, well, 1280x1024. The rendering does take quite a bit of time (and, yeah, it does get a tad frustrating when one gets non-selected), but I do most renders over-night so as to free up the system (and it is an antiquated one) during the day. If it takes me a few days to get one WP submission completed, well, I feel that's just the way it goes - kind of the price I pay to play. In the mean time I work on other projects (bootskins, logons, or docks) that I can adapt my already-rendered images to.
