Impulsively Tired
all I was was to be animated
Sunday, November 2, 2008 by Bichur | Discussion: Stardock Support General
So....
I made (or.. apparently tried to make) a post last night on the Impulse Forums.... can't find it anywhere.
I don't know if it's because:
1) the forums have been going 'BOOM' quite a bit this weekend (at least for me).
or
2) TrendMicro doesn't like IMPULSEivness:

Going to the Impulse forums using Impulse or any browser... I'm bombarded with warnings...
I had read for the animations on the Halloween skin I needed 6.30.100
SDC shows I have 6.30.099 with no update available
Impulse shows I have 6.30.099 with no update available
Impulse's Dock says there's an update - which is not available using the dock apparently
The question(s) I had posted included:
1) what version of netframework is needed for Impulse? Currently I have NFW 1.1 & 2.0... but I don't know if I need 3.0 or 3.5 & whether it can be installed alongside the other 2 or does one, the other or both need to be removed.
2) how can you tell if Impulse is updating itself with no status bar?
3) why does Impulse keep popping out a message telling me it's decided to work offline since it can't connect to the servers, yet I can use Impulse to go to the forums, chat, etc (at least chat doesn't give me warnings)
4) why does Impulse always say I'm not logged in?
5) how can I get it to log in? I tried to manually log in using the change my log in procedures but it can't connect to the servers
6) I have earthlink dialup w/accelerator - TrendMicro 2007 w/firewall - proxy is set to localhost 8080 which seems to work on everything else (SDC included)
7) will WB6.30.100 ever be available on SDC? I have no probs with SDC - it opens and IDs updates within a minute
I'm willing to work with Impulse, but dammit Capn uh dunna think uh ken hold er

Security update for DNS - with a known issue of not connecting to the internet if you have ZA?
crap. installed on 8/31/2008. says the update cannot be removed.

Great.........not that I think it really matters, but where does it tell you that?
All and all, I believe we've fucked this machine as much as we can without it going belly up.
Here's the choices:
Un-install all NET versions and re-install
or
Pick a Restore point after the 23rd and prior to this mess.
If you pick door #2 you'll, of course, have to live without that animation you soooooo desired, but there's nothing that says the NET fix will get you any closer either.
Your call.
The "agony of defeat" sucks.

hmmm...
door 1 - first find and download net versions (on dialup or get the wife to download on wireless when she's at school)
door 2 - pick one of 6 and no animation
it ain't just the animation... i've noticed from reading various posts, updates from SDC seem to be lagging somewhat behind Impulse... and the lag seems to be getting longer = update for wb on impulse has been there well over a week
and now my subscription has expired
I'm gonna have to sleep on this a while.
Thanks, Duck. ![]()

Yep, first he breaks his throbber, now he's broken other BITS.... hmmm, bit of a Marquis de Sade, if you ask me.

Seriously, I had a similar problem with the WC browser some yonks ago... something to do with my DNS service not allowing it or something after routine MS updates. I couldn't figure out all the technical jargon to supposedly fix it so just did a sytem restore to before the updates to resolve it.
Anyhow, I hope you get it fixed soon, Bichur, there's nothing more frustrating than things that don't work properly... or at all. ![]()

when I found this: Impulse Won't Log In

Ya know, I gave that Earthlink Accelerator a glancing thought, but dismissed it as irrelevant.....hummmm
Is this 'Accelerator' embedded in a Earthlink IE mutant?

Is this 'Accelerator' embedded in a Earthlink IE mutant?
I used to have this setup before i went to DSL this past winter. The Accelerator is a separate App that compresses graphics images on web pages. It can be disabled. Earthlink dialup is IE dependent. About as much as I can tell yrag.
Reply #73 Monday, November 3, 2008 5:59 PM
don't think it actually embedded per se. It's separate but it's part of the Total Access - has it's own floating tool bar if I want - the other parts are BHOs of which I turn off whenever I see them on.
TM doens't like accelerator much - i get an accelerator must close every so often - sometime frequently - seems it hasn't been updated since either 2004 or 2005
when it closes, internet still works, just really really slow
I've also been thinking... seems after either SP3 or FF3 (got them both around the same time) - the accelerator crashes more often and I seem to get a lot of script error pop ups - sometimes I'll get one popping up 10-15 minutes after all browsers are closed
IE7 takes about 10-15 times longer to load a page than FF - with or with the accelerator
I probably should reformat, but I have a partition that'll put me back to 2003 - downloading all the MS updates again on dialup.... aauugggh - reformatted in 2006 & even with an SP2 disc (272mb, 33+hrs to download on dialup - that was fun) I still had, at that time, at least 45 updates to download - seems like I needed to reboot after every 3rd one.
So I'm wondering, if I get off my ass, back my stuff up and reformat (no I don't have anything like acronis) - are the SPs totally cummalitive? Do I have to reinstall SP2 & 3 or just 3?
maybe I'll try an uninstall/reboot/ reinstall of EL 1st....

Just 3.
You're making me dizzy with the acronyms ..... you get a job with the government??????
EL ?
TM ?
Can you use Earthlink without the IE bells and whistles? You can uninstall it and reinstall an IE7 vanilla flavor......
Anybody who still relies on a wire stretched across a corn field needs a backup app..... http://backup.comodo.com/ (4MBs and it's FREE .......get the damn thing)

not counting a half life in the Army... going on 23yrs with U.N.C.L.E.
and noted....
man... that looked so good on paper........
uninstalled - rebooted -
opened a direct connection - got on the internet
open Impulse - still no effect
- go into the preference & uncheck proxy....
Not only was I logged in, I saw 6.30.100!!!
![]()
then Impulse pops up some kind of message down in the bottom left informing me of it's need to check the entire internet for updated graphics - and then I lost all connection activity
waited a long while..... then killed it....
figured.... what the hey. it's a connection thingy... once i reinstall earthlink I'll sort it out....
yeeeaaah, right
reinstalled...... went through the prompts.... told me all's well, just about done.... damn thing froze up.... after 30min of the little progress bar repeating itself.... I killed it..... ended up with 2 earthlink systray icons instead of 1 earthlink and one accelerator - the one posing as accelator did nothing - earthlink's taskbar didn't even have a hint of accelerator in the tools where it normally is
apparently my TotalAccess disk is from 2004 and it seems they've been updating stuff whilst I wasn't looking (and yeah, I probably didn't wait long enough before I killed it)
eh. no worries for de Troll.... bout time system restore earned it's keep....
Your System has been restored to a time before you screwed with it - we hope... but System Restore's official disclaimer is System Restore has worked with you before.
click TotalAccess....

I didn't do anything with it, it was on the disk. Don't blame me if you forgot it. Here, I'll put the disk in for you. Look right here... see it? Here, let me highlight it for you. Now do you see it? Alrighty then, finish installing it please.
I'm sorry, that's not a valid win32 application
Squeeze Me? It's yours. If it's not valid what the hell is it doing on your disk? Here, how about if I just copy it over and put it on my desktop. Then you can get a closer look at it....
I'm sorry, that's not a valid win32 application
CRAP!!!!!
Hey Restore! Wake up, you're not done yet...
I haven't been asleep Dave, I've worked with you before. Didn't you read my disclaimer?...
Okay, we have once again breached the boundaries of time. Hit it.

i guess i need to contact ELink to have them send me a new disk.
One the one hand, I'm trying.
One the other hand, it's me trying.
One the good hand, my wife's only laughing because she got a laptop last month.

LOL - no smilies.....guess they're still giving CPR to the hamsters......
Wow...you do work for the Government....apparently the Postal Service........
You don't need the 'EL' software. Just set up your connection: http://kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?s=st%3D235%2Ce%3D0000000002010280604%2Ck%3D102%2Csxi%3D12&article=23597
If you're losing connection without it, then the problem is somewhere in the XP settings.
It's been so long see I've seen dialup, I'm afraid I'm going to be reasonably worthless as to settings .......
....surely, there must be at least one other troll on the planet with dialup..........do you have the Troll Hotline number???
Reply #77 Tuesday, November 4, 2008 11:28 PM
haven't lost connection yet tonight, but I haven't opens Impulse either. When I had Impulse installed before it kept hanging up updating itself
what I did was set IE to dial when there was no connection - so when I opened IE the normal connect box came up
but now, eveytime I open something, installer has another attempt at accelerator - least it takes no more than 2 cancels
got the link above bookmarked just in case.
graphics laden pages take a really long time without acceleration
forums don't take too long without it, unless the post has screenshots in it
I just opened the wb gallery page at 22:24 and right now (22:26) i've got 12 full thumbnails out of 24 loaded on the page and I have it set to show 48
Reply #78 Tuesday, November 4, 2008 11:52 PM
Good luck there Bichur. I'm still hoping you'll find the solution. I remember dialup and you're right graphics on net pages are no fun especially without the accelerator. Have you heard from support yet?
Reply #79 Tuesday, November 4, 2008 11:59 PM
crap. forgot i put in a ticket.... I'll go check...
Reply #80 Wednesday, November 5, 2008 12:50 AM
So... being the impatient troll i am and after reading all those whiney posts about support still hasn't got back to me....
We have created a [secret] that should help with connection issues. Please follow the process below:
1st thing Monday.
who knew?
I probably should have put a sticky on my monitor reminding me I had a ticket in and I really should wait.
