Google's Chrome Browser
Tuesday, September 2, 2008 by DrJBHL | Discussion: Internet
The long rumored Google Chrome Browser (Beta) release is supposed to be today (read it in several posts/blogs on the net)!
Attached a vid of it...hope it works! I don't know if I'll give up my FF3 so quickly, and in general I'm really wary of Betas, but this looks interesting.
One thing is certain: Google's going to be collecting a heck of a lot of data on folks and their browsing habits, and as we all know,
"Information is power."
And on another happy note, a gift to my friends here at WC: 10 super fun add ons to Google Earth!

(sorry, the WWW thing wouldn't work and neither would the smiley!)

Very interesting, Ken. I've tried it out, and it is VERY intuitive, and while fast, it is not that much faster than FF3.
What I do like is the small RAM footprint even with multiple tabs. I am still nervous about the info thing. Also...
If those suckers steal any of your ships, the old Abbot and Costello routine comes to mind: "Slowly I turn, step by step..."
and Bugs Bunny's: "Myehhhh.....You realize, of course, this means war!" ![]()

On the GUI side I would agree but, most of the their own hype was on how usable and stable the it is. Yes, it's stable but, far from usable IMO. Not to mention it intermittently crashes when I close the last remaining tab.
As for the claims to low memory footprint I'm not seeing that. If their goal is towards web based apps than they shouldn't promote it as a browser because so far it's failed.

Sorry, but no. It was Abbot and Costello with a guy in a "wife beater" and suspenders in front of a brownstone. I have a good memory (so far). ![]()

Failed seems a bit harsh don't you think? especially for a beta? I'm not sure what you are comparing memory foot prints to this early in development and all that jiberish but perhaps "Simplicity" is the key we are looking for here. I have not experienced a single crash or problem and ussually it's an End-User error that is the cause to most common crashes but that's another story all together. In order to fix the java related issues, you HAVE to be running Java 6 release 10. This will take care of any Java not loading correctly. Hope this helps. ![]()

So far my tests have shown it is ALWAYS faster than everything else out there and on majorly complicated web sites, like say DIGG, there is no comparison. Chrome blows everything else away.
If it had any form of adblocking, it looks good enough under Vista/Windoblinds that I'd switch TODAY. ![]()

Concepts,
Maybe a bit harsh but, when someone creates a comic book bestowing how great something is even at a beta level than expectations are going to be high. Java's up to date and I did a reboot and that fixed the tab issue.
I'm still not seeing the speed in general but, it is definitely fast on the Web 2.0 sites.

So!
Everyone's happy! This is soooooooo refreshing to see and hear! ![]()
In truth, all the browsers collect data, Starkers. Do you have a specific problem with Google (I'm not being facetious)...besides the data thing?

I couldn't find it in my Programs folder. I may have missed it. I don't like anything being sneaky or incognito on my pc. It failed to retrieve my FF bookmarks. I had no idea how much I relied on my FF add ons or my Roboform toolbar. Not to mention I'm so sick of the color blue on my screen. I seldomly use any of the "web based apps" this was built for. I'll keep an eye on the advancements but for now , it'll remain uninstalled.

Yeah I do... they have slimy underhanded business practices that even governments can't/don't even get away with because of public scrutiny/accountability and fear of losing office/getting impeached, etc, etc.
Google intrudes into peoples lives like no other company in history... and all without direct consent through things like Google Analytics, and phone home devices covertly installed in its services/products....purely to target ads... spam at people who bloody well don't want to see them/it. I hate fucking ads big time... they're everywhere you damn well look, and the last place I want to see Google generated ads/spam is in MY email box... and no, I'm not talking G-Mail
Personally, I'd like to see someone target Google with a virus/trojan that takes down the whole shebang... hardware, software and data banks in one foul swoop

Starkers, me fine boyo....In Amerika, all the government has to say is "9/11" and "Poof" The Bill of Rights, and Habeas Corpus disappear!
Yes, we need unorthodox approaches to dicover those who wish to hurt us (one being not to try and run their countries for them) but to suggest that the government couldn't and doesn't engage in underhanded ways of practicing it's "business" is like suggesting there are honest foxes that could guard the chicken coop. There aren't and it's because people are only people and money/power don't talk, they swear! ![]()
Which browser/site doesn't collect data on you? Google doesn't spell it out in so many words, and they engage in "Newspeak" (viz. "Patriot Act"), but I don't use Google Desktop for that very reason (like I want Google indexing everything on my machine?)
but, please be careful about that Trojan/virus talk...G-d only knows who's listening.
In truth, there is a place for "Cloud Computing" and a place for "Desktop Computing" (i.e word processing....remember how Personal Computing was all about positive control and independence?).
I am just saying "Know the Beast for what it is, and isn't." or, as Don Vito said, "Keep your friends close but your enemies closer." ![]()

Thank godness I live in Oz... where halfwit politicians are so busy slanging off at eachother they haven't the time for running amok with Patriot Acts n' the like.
Yeah, I was wondering about that van oustide sporting a huge G and blacked out windows.....
Being done as we speak... the neighbourhood thugs are stealing their wheels and distibutor cap.... and shortly I'll go out and chain them to the lamp post.

Try Google Picasa. In my opinion, it's the best thing Google created after the search engine.
I kinda like Chrome too, but I hate it when Google disguises a snooping app phoning home as a minimal browser. The installer I downloaded was a 400 or 500 KB file. When I ran it, it downloaded the actual app for me, and installed itself automatically. I have no idea where. Can't find it in C:\Program Files or D:\Apps [where I install my proggies]
Whether it's going to become my primary browser? Nope. It's too simple to replace Firefox.
Whether it'll be my primary source for managing web apps? Yep. Firefox is too cluttered for that.

It's in beta so ofcoure it's not going to be very pretty or usable and definately not skinnable, yet anyways. Give it some time.
