WB on Vista is borked

Friday, July 25, 2008 by I.R. Brainiac | Discussion: Stardock Support General

Clean install of Vista, latest vid drivers for geforce 8600.

Took 3 tries just to get WB to install...having to disable all antivirus and windows defender was bullcrap.

Seemed to be fine after the 3rd time but on reboot today...the wrong skin is being used,WB loaded diamond with no window skinning at all...no frames,no buttons, classic menus.

Cant go back to aero, cant change skins, cant unload WB.This is not helping me get over my dislike of Vista...or skinning it.

Havnt even launched SKS6 yet...GOD help me.

WBconfig will attempt to change skins once per reopening...it will try for a long time then still diamond...then wont respond to any other attempts til its closed and reopened.

Then I got diamond on start menu and toolbar, and aero metal for frames...mmmmmmmm special.

I.R. you are well above me in computer experience so I hesitate to offer help.

Noticed that you have an NVIDIA card, do you have nView turned off?

Could it be the drivers? Maybe go back to the last ones and see if that works.

It sounds like you have all ready tried an uninstall, reboot and reinstall, if not give that a shot with running CCleaner in between in case you just have a bad download.

You have probably tried all of these things by now.

No reference to nview in either the taskmanager or msconfig.
The only service related to nvidia is the display driver service.

Now I have 3 different skins being used at once.

this is the only set of display drivers that have been installed...this is a brand new OS install.

I have been trying to replicate this issue but haven't so far. Can you start up a ticket with us at support@stardock.com and reference this thread?

Please let us know what other skinning software you have installed/running too.

I've also tried to repro this here to no avail. I've installed WB clean from Impulse, using the US-1 server, rebooted, then applied a skin after rebooting without a problem.

WBconfig will attempt to change skins once per reopening...it will try for a long time then still diamond...then wont respond to any other attempts til its closed and reopened.

Do you mean that simply opening wbconfig.exe would prompt WB to change skins, or do you mean that it would change skins again after restarting your computer?

Do you have MyColors installed on there too? (No known problems, just curious to know for reference purposes)

Clean install...AVG and WB only.

Tried to completely uninstall impulse,WB...reboot,reinstallWB,reboot and now Vista will not run...get some wierd cannot find dxsomething .dll...explorer goes into a restart loop.

Even after uninstalling WB and rebooting again.

Vista is now completely unusable with just aero loaded...no Stardock progs but SDC.

Cant fix Vista so I'm giving up and back in XP.

This sounds like a stupid question, so I'm sorry for asking, but did you try the computer after the clean install of Vista but before the you intalled WBs?

Could it be possible that something got messed up with the clean install of Vista?
