dynamic dreams

why arent there more?

Monday, May 26, 2008 by o0SHUUMI0o | Discussion: Animated Wallpapers

ok im going to probably ruffle some feathers here.... but i am sick and tired of the Video dreams.... yes i know some of you render them yourselves then make it into a looping video....but c'mon guys, it gets really lame and boring, where are the dynamic dreams at? and i see so much more potential, why not something not just dynamic, but in ways interactive? why cant we have an object, item, creature that does its own things, but you can click on it or throw other objects at and have it interact?

why dont we have more content like that? if someone can create a tutorial on dynamic content and not just looping video....id love to try my hand at it. even the so called dynamic earth dream isnt so dynamic when you really think about it.... its just a rendered earth that adds lighting darkness depending on time of day....but it is still the same static earth with the same lights in the same oplaces at nightime. i need richer content, and if someone can give me a heads up on how to create the dynamic content, ill be glad to do something.

any ideas?

For those dreams you need the SDK kit. And that will be released in february 08. Together with deskcapes 2.0

Deskscapes 2.0 has been released but the SDK (software development kit) has not.

Some of us have been waiting patiently for over a year now. I don't think waiting a little longer is big of a deal. I'm sure when it's ready, it will be realesed.

Windows Vista Ultimate users do not need to purchase DeskScapes to run dream files. Just download the free version from here.

and that "here" link is still 1.02

oOSHUUMIOo . . .it's an open forum and all are welcome to contribute what they can.  It may not always cleve to the topic but it may add color or humor or what-not.

In other words, be cool with comments you don't like . . it's all good Brother.

I wonder if they're not saving the major "move to dynamic" for windows 7/some other major release of a product. This could also be because it stresses hardware even more than just aero and a video dream. Tech may just not truely be ready yet.

The dynamic dreams are actually supposed to be less resource intensive.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that stephenw was trying to tell you that version 2.0 isn't out for download yet when you click on that particular link on the Stardock site he was talking about.

Try not to pounce on comments too fast o0SHUUMI0o, especially when someone takes the time to come to your thread and hazard an answer

Well, its way past februaru 08 and still no sign of these dynamic dreams? If they're ont his site, I can't find them, perhaps they need a shearch for types of dreams...

There is nothing new about the SDK and AFAIK no release date has been set yet. And with Windows7 just around the corner and a ton of programs to update/test, there isn't much hope to have a release in the near future IMO.

Now, if you're really motivated, there are two options:

  1. You are an expert in DirectX and know how to program in C/C++. If you have a portfolio or a few 3D programs to show, you can contact Stardock (I don't know who exactly is handling this thing, so your best bet is to send an email to support and they will route you to the right person) and ask for access to the SDK (under NDA). I can't promise you they will give you access, but if you have the skills and motivation, there's a good chance. If not, go to (2)
  2. You don't want to sign NDAs and you know enough about lowlevel windows programming, calling conventions and stuff like that, as well as basic D3D. Go to google and search for DeskScapes SDK. There is some old info on dynamic dreams. It's outdated, doesn't work out of the box and some of the stuff is wrong/incomplete. Any seasoned win32/d3d programmer should be able to make it work though.

I chose 2 (did it independently at around the same time - Sept 2007) and didn't sign any evil NDA . With all the available info, it's so much easier compared to starting from scratch. Since then though, I haven't seen any dynamic dreams other than from Stardock, so I'm not sure there is so much interest really (from people who could actually code a dynamic dream).

I can't help you anymore than that as I gave my word not to give out specific technical info, but if you manage to build dynamic dreams, you might be interested in two small utilities I wrote: DreamBuilder which is a command line equivalent to DreamMaker and Nightmares which allows to run dreams in a window directly from the dll file/record a video/help debugging (no need to build a .dream file, load it and crash explorer in a loop anymore ). That's it for the shameless plug...

Good luck!
