I use one Tabbed Dock that has five tabs: System Tray, Taskbar, Applications, Security and General. You can guess that General gets the "Don't know where to put these" icons. The rest are easy to figure out. You can break the Applications down if you have special interests i.e Photography. Skinning etc.
This way I don't have one Icon on the desktop. I have the Recycle Icon on the Zoomer Dock.
You could probably break the single Tabbed Dock down to two or more if you wanted and have them around the edges of your desktop. I have the Tabbed Dock at the top and set as a drawer that way all you see is the tabs. The Zoomer Dock is always hidden of screen unless I move over to it to use it.
I was going to post a screenshot, but you have been around here long enough that you know how this stuff works and looks. I happen to like a clean desktop as far as Icons go. Leaves more room for DX Widgets and Objects and all that other stuff.

Tabs:
ODNT: all the ODNT programs
My Stuff: my docs, my programs, my computer, etc.
Internet: anything that takes me to the internet
Programs: all my skinning programs, GIMP, Paint, Terragen, etc.
Media: Xion, Media Player, etc.

On the zoomer I have folders I access more than a few times a day, a clock and the weather.

I'd spend an entire day(minimum) setting up all the docks/shortcuts/icons that I would want.

And now that I went and bought it an hour ago I'm thinking maybe I'll set up a dock or two a day until I'm done.
