Another System Tray Question

How do you change system tray icons that alternate from one to another (battery status, network status, msn messenger)? Since it did not give me an option like the recycle bin gives (empty/full) I tried changing the "online" network status while connected and disconnected to change the "offline" icon, but it seems it only recognizes the last icon that you change it to. Im no idiot, but it seems like I have exhausted all means of making this work.
