AVG Free 7.5 is no more.....

And there's a "catch" to it's replacement.

I just ran my daily avg scan after which I got a splash screen telling me AVG Free 7.5 will no longer be updated,and you must upgrade to "free"  version 8.0. Sounds good,right? NOT! So-called free version 8 will only scan your mail for 30 days then you must upgrade to the paid version.Read the reveiws on c|net here.http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?cdlPid=10834624 They barely mention the fact you're being "railroaded" into the paid version after 30 days. How much you want to bet that 8.0 is a real beast to remove after 30 days is up?

i have been using AVG 8 free for a while now and have not come across this no email scanning after 30 days thing. Maybe you downloaded a trial version of the paid program?.
This is from the c|net site:"Some features, such as e-mail scanning, will work during your first 30 days using AVG Free but get disabled unless you upgrade".1,143,390 people can't be wrong,think I'll stick with AVG awhile longer.
We need one of the experts to stop by and explain just how an AV scan works. Could the time a scan takes be effected by memory and or cpu?
AMD64, 1.5Gb ram another 1.5Gb of readyboost,though I see no difference with it. Ram usage rarely hits 60%/ CPU same

I've been using avast for a while It seems to me to be one of the better free Antivirus programs. I think I'll stick with it .

i have been using version 8 for a lot longer than 30 days though, in fact ever since avg 8 was in beta. maybe thats why i get full functionality. i checked the install date and it's feb 08 when i installed it. all updates are working fine, email scanner fully functional. anti spyware fully functional.

I use Nod32 its by far the best Antivirus product I have ever used, it has an extremely low footprint you dont even notice it's there.

I used to use AVG, but once I tried the trial of Nod I couldnt justify using it anymore. I havent had a virus infection in a couple of years now. Nod isn't that expensive for relative piece of mind you get for your $

On the other security fronts, Commodo's free firewall is very good and I have grown to like spyware terminator which is also free.

Does anyone else hate these spyware programs which are always active? I find they slow your machine down more than the problems they are there to prevent.

Installed it today.

Be sure to watch; it will want to install a toolbar in your browser. If you don't mind that sort of thing, no worries.

So far so good, although it seems to be a tad slower in bringing up the main interface. And it appears they've integrated Anti-Spyware with this version. That should be a plus.

There is also a link checker that rates the links in Google (only search engine I use) as being safe or not.

No problems here on the email scanning timing out; my email host scans for viruses.

Comodo AV
Comodo Firewall
Firefox

One is never safe from malicious software, but with this cocktail you will keep a PC clean and protected. Or you could use Linux with its open-source community, but that's a tad extreme for some.

I never got any message about AVG 7.5 not being supported/updated anymore. I just wasn't able to update all of a sudden, and then spent the better part of an hour trying to figure out what was wrong with my old XP-Laptop. Grrr....

I now have switched to AVIRA as it performed quite well on the last program-comparison. I don't mind paying for a full version for my main rig, but my laptop is only online once about every two months nowadays and that is only to update Windows and other software.

I'll get 8.0 when I eventually get the nag screen. The mail scanner is of little use to me anyway, as I check my mail whilst its still on the ISP server [using mailwasher pro]. Anything I don't recognise or have a mail rule set up for does'nt get onto my computer anyway...

I've always been happy with AVG, so I'll stick with the tried & trusted.

Have you tried Avast! 4.8 ? The home version is free ...
I've been using it for over 2 years and no issues with it ..

Complaining about how a product you value has no value and should be given away for free forever stinks of something.

I like AVG free . . but I have options; other free antivirus, paid antivirus, no antivirus.

I see it as a glass half full . . I got great service for free for years . .maybe it's time to pay up and support the great service?


Bravo Zubaz, I couldn't agree more.

By the way, Avast is a great FREE anti-virus program. Online Armor and Comodo are the two top rated firewalls made(also FREE)and there are several anti-trojan programs available for FREE. Try looking over the forums at Wilder Security and Castle Cops for information on many other security programs.

Another good place to look for free security apps is Major Geeks. I have download programs based upon their reviews and have not run into any problems. A nice mix of free, shareware and paid or commercial software for you to look at. Here is a link. WWW Link

While you are there check out all the other software also. Really is a good source for what you may be looking for.

Another good place,but no reveiws.They have an free update checker that actually works.Blazing fast,about 3-4 seconds.Only lists 19 of my programs, but it's dead-on accurate..NET framework required.Worth a look.I've used it 2 1/2 months with no problems.

I'm a NOD32 user here.

I would say that buying a good AV solution is probably the best investment you can make. Free is good as a temporary fix, but remember the free versions normally don't auto-update & run a few hours behind as well.

Avoid Norton like the plague if you actually care about using your PC for anything other than staring at an hour glass. The same goes for F-Secure. We've got the latter at work & boy do I wish we hadn't. I never thought I'd see a core2 hit 100% usage for 5 minutes when booting, but that's what F-Secure does for you.

For an alternative, try Kaspersky. I've seen some very favourable reviews recently; especially from gamers.

Another useful utility is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. It saved me from thinking I would have to wipe my install when I got the Virtumonde infection. Nothing else saw it until MAM had cleaned up a bit.

Filehippo is a great site & the free update checker is a nice feature.

The main thing to remember with any utils you download/buy, is that if they work for you, then stick with them. As you can tell, I detest Norton & F-Secure, but a guy in our IT recommends Norton to all his mates. Mind you, he plays games on an X-Box & uses his PC for e-mail only.

Been using that for a year or so myself. Pretty handy and never an issue.

FYI:My findings. AVG8.0 pins my cpu at 100% on startup for 8 minutes,then drops to 50-70% during it's 140 miute scan. 50,000k +ram. Active AV/antispyware kept it humming at 38-55% all the time.   Avast;20-30% on startup for 2minutes, 10-30% during it's 80 minute scan.11,000k.Active AV/AS......hello...tap,...tap,tap...Is this thing on? 00-4% if I stare at task man long enough to see it.This with 6 of 7 providers running(one's a boot scan) Plus it's skinnable! Btw,[email protected],1.5gb ram 6 month old Compaq PC. Any guess what I'm using now?

Running avast! on my notebook & AVG8 Free on my two desktops.

AVG8 Free seems to be as efficient & unobtrusive as 7.5 and it appears that email scanning is a permanent feature, rather than time-limited as some others have posted. No startup/CPU issues as related by Wizard1956; in fact both systems seem to boot a bit quicker since upgrading to AVG8.

avast! is also very unobtrusive, without any startup issues, and I'm pleased with it on my notebook.

At this point, it's a tossup between AVG8 Free & avast! from my experience so far.

Wizard1956 , Following another thread which I had started ..I decided to go with Webgizmo's recommendation , and try out the AUSLOGIC DEFRAG ...

~ it worked a dream and is really fast , complete with an online report at the end of defragging ....

I have 3 160 gig hd's and it did them all within 30 minutes ... give it a go !! ( best I've used in years !! )

I've also heard that about the mail scanner. I don't know what the deal was w/v8.0, maybe a bad download.Avast is still far better imo,"invisible" updating(up to every 4 hours).better UI,more features and a smaller footprint. And yes, I would pay for this,if it wasn't free.I'm not the total freeloader that I'm made out to be.Bottom line,use what you're happy with,free or paid.
