The Wonders of the Internet
Tuesday, April 29, 2008 by liquidguru | Discussion: Internet
Even here, in Tioman (a very small island 50km off the east coast of Malaysia) I'm lucky enough to have ADSL internet, which enable me to stay in contact with my family in Europe and to have fun with my underwater digital video and photo camaras and update my website http://www.liquidguru.com. Pretty cool, considering how far away I am from everything.
Today marked an additional appreciation of how amaziing the internet is turning out to be.
I love games, and am lucky enough to have a Sony PSP, especially as I have no TV, no radio etc etc, just my trusty laptop. I have just finshed playing a game, on my PSP, called Wipeout over the internet with my oldest mate who lives in the UK. We both have this little hand-held consol, connected to our routers and through that to the internet and can play, in real time, racing games. At the same time we are chatting over Skype. And the cost? Nothing other than our ISP charges.
It may sound like 'hey, yeah, so what?'....but I'm on a tiny little island in the South China Sea, my mate is in England and we can play. in real-time, a game, together, over the internet.......technology really is totally awesome!!!!
Sometimes you just need to sit back and realise what an amazing time we live in, appricate the technology around us and remember what a priviledged time we live in.....
Long Live the Internet

oh, and if you wanted to talk to family or friends, you HAD to either visit in person, write a letter(snail) or telephone them and if you had something to show them, you had to bring it with you.
yep internet and computer technology is a lifeline now. can't imagine going back.

This could be true Chasbo, but we must not let it affect our lives now...i believe that common-sense and humanity's inherent goodness will win through eventually..technology will overcome the energy (oil) crisis and food production.....if it doesn't, then it's all the more important to enjoy the 'now'
I see, on a day to day basis, the destruction that over-fishing does to our reef eco-system. It saddens me. But every time I see a turtle, nudibranch, juvenile many-spotted sweetlips, cuttlefish, seahorse, what ever it is, I'm reminded how lucky I am to live now...
Again, it can be....but every new technology seems to have a dark side if you look hard enough....if you use it for good, it will be good
And least you think I'm some sort of uber-hippy, please know that I usually work two weeks straight, 8am to 11pm, maybe then get a day off, looking after people, teaching them to dive.....i work much too hard to be a hippy
