Hyperdesk

by The Skins Factory

Sunday, April 13, 2008 by messiah1 | Discussion: Customization Software

So with Hyperdesk just around the corner, is this finally some competition for WindowBlinds?  How well will TSF and Stardock play together?  I know TSF used to contribute here, but they don't show up much anymore, at least with content.  I'm anxiously awaiting the release and can't wait to see DarkMatter.  Hurry up Jeff.

What are your thoughts?

*UPDATE:  Hyperdesk is live.  Go check it out and leave your constructive  comments about it here.  (Notice I didn't say "only leave your good comments or bash it".  Constructive comments can be positive or negative but should be supported with facts.)

Downloaded the free Onyx suite

Install was easy enough.
Nothing crazy in the EULA.
Fairly easy to make selections (I expected clicking or double-clicking to set options.  Clicking on preview seemed odd.)
Long-ish load time to change themes.
Not sure I'd have set Tangerine as the default substyle.
Had to reboot.
Had to unload WB.
Had to change to Win XP style (not classic)

Expected more file type icons to be skinned.
Not sure about the color scheme.

The icons are wonderful.  Downloading the free hypersuite now.

Which one is that? And yeah all I would want are the icons anyway, the themes are soo limited because of the msstyle format....fail.

Through the Hypersuite application, Can the desktop icons be resized? Or is it just the XP default size?

Sony Ericson.  Last one in the list.

Unloaded and went with VistaPlus by Adni.

Much better.

No.  that's addressed in the Hyperdesk forums: http://hyperdesk.com/forums/index.php?s=e5cef5af02b3800b5493d8cd26d72fcd&showtopic=14

Exe installers scare me. Is there any way to just get the icons out of it without having to run the damn theme and have it try to apply or anything?

Well Probably not I suppose. I see they have a few third party apps to 'help out' Hypersuite.

saw that.  Nothing Stardock..Golly.  Wonder why not .

Exe installers scare me.
From smaller publishers I'd agree.

Don't think so.  But I loaded the suite, then loaded up my WB skin and the icons remained.  It's not perfect . . but it works.

Fail, I just wanted to be able to use the icons with Avedesk, not to apply them to Windows.

Reading what everyone has posted so far, I think I'll just stick with Stardock and support its skinners where and when I can.

You should be able to find them in the extras folders...Here's where I found mine C:\Program Files\The Skins Factory\Hyperdesk\Sony Ericsson Onyx Series\Sony Ericsson Onyx Series Extras

Ok...but when I run the installer what happens? I really don't want this thing on my machine, I only want the icons.

About what I expected...some parts are stunning, some are avg,and some parts are awful.
Jesh(like any good salesman),knows what to show...and what to hide.

Apart from the Disney stuff,it looks like they got a lot of mileage out the graghics...all 5 sets of themes look very similar.(My Colors does this too).

Icons and media players...subperb
Start menus and taskbars...above average to good
windows and interiors/controls...terrible

I like a lot of their ideas, and am interested in where they are headed...but damn I get tickled at some of the descriptions...I know you have to be proud of your work and promotion is all about getting people excited but some of that wording is over the top. They make it sound like nobody can touch them...as tho they were all alone atop the pack AND invented skinning.

All in all,if you forgive the hubris, its a promising start...the only thing holding them back is the visual style format.

Visual style format has nothing to do with the hideous design of most of the skin, the only place they are really limited is in the frames.

I have no idea what their pay skins look like but if they are anything along the quality lines of the Sony theme I would feel ripped off. Massive lack of effort and originality in almost every area.

I see Jesh is already blocking and deleting comments from anyone who has anything negative to say in his threads.

Lame.

Point being, the screenshots dont show the poorly designed areas of the theme, mostly icons, WMP and frames.

holding them back...as in the only thing stopping them from getting better John.

If they had done a better job of the windows and contols/buttons...these could have been very good.

I dont agree that they were hideous(except for the interiors)...that sounds like neowin talk...was the visual style great?...no,but it wasnt hideous either.
