Hyperdesk

Sunday, April 13, 2008 by messiah1 | Discussion: Customization Software

So with Hyperdesk just around the corner, is this finally some competition for WindowBlinds?  How well will TSF and Stardock play together?  I know TSF used to contribute here, but they don't show up much anymore, at least with content.  I'm anxiously awaiting the release and can't wait to see DarkMatter.  Hurry up Jeff.

What are your thoughts?

*UPDATE:  Hyperdesk is live.  Go check it out and leave your constructive  comments about it here.  (Notice I didn't say "only leave your good comments or bash it".  Constructive comments can be positive or negative but should be supported with facts.)

I have no doubt about that, but this is the last warning for this thread.

I'll all for a more civil discussion. That was my intention initially. But a person can only take so much before you want to fight back. This is nothing...

Who remembers the lashing i got at skinz.org when i tried to recruit skinners to do work for hire? Now that was brutal.

But love me or hate me, we've paid our dues. Look how far Brad and I have gone in that time. That was back in 1999 and now Brad is doing like 20+ million in revenue and growing and we'll i'm not hehe but i'm not eating ketchup soup either

A lot of the issue stems back from some problems between TSF and Stardock over business things in the past that i'm not going to go into. But Brad and I seemed to have worked things out, there's no reason we can't either. i don't mind you criticizing our work but don't call us lazy. No one works harder than we do. When you spend all your days and nights on something and then read people picking it apart and calling you lazy, you have to say something.

We have even discussed putting out versions of our work in the WB format. Do you honestly think having more skinning ability is something we would not want? I had to come up with a skinning solution of our own in a fairly short period of time and since i used the patch it was the most natural way for me to do it. Would have taken years to develop a WB clone.

You never, ever see me post on a skin i don't like. Not for years and years. If i don't like something i don't say anything. Go on deviantART and point out a comment i made to an artist where i just said their work "sucks". You'll never find one. I might make a suggestion on how to make something better. That's it.

So let's erase the past and start anew. Who knows maybe good things can come of it. And no vstyler we're not taking time to compete against you in the competition. Too much work on our plates.

This is what is known as an olive branch.

There is room for everyone to play in this area and learn from each other.  We used to have multiple high profile skinning sites that "competed" with each other, but we all got along. This should be no different.

I will say right out that Software is not easy to do.  However, it's easy to take for granted what Stardock has built up over the years, so comparing a new solution to it is like comparing apples to apple blossoms.  It takes time, development and feedback to make it stable.

Art is subjective, but technology either works or it doesn't.  HyperDesk is brand new, so we need to look for the potential instead of at the kinks that need to be worked out.

Perhaps I could have chose a better word than lazy, extrememly simplified maybe, barely any actual work involved in the areas in question ...maybe.. regardless.. for both of you, supposed professionals, to come in here like stampeding rhino's insulting everyone, calling me personally names like kiddo, lesser skinner, mini-napoleon, demented etc etc.. is unacceptable. This after a long reputation of doing the same thing in the past.

I tried giving u honest criticism on DA and you blocked it.

Its a pity you wont enter the contest

I'll accept that olive branch if only for the better good of the community and people I happen to care about very much and wish you luck with Hyperdesk in the future.

Thanks Butch.

vstyler: Sometimes its how a person says something not what they say. Also perception plays a big part of it. If I see someone just signed up the same day they bash us, i take that as hostile and not legitimate criticism.

Vista: I have a copy of Vista running on my iMac. I want to skin it, but like i said, the strong majority is still on XP (as high as 74% some days). Given how much time and money we're spent on developing Hyperdesk app, the site, the themes (no matter what you think of them) i have to focus on the masses first. Ideally, having Stardock allow us to use their format and sell Vista versions of our themes could be possible. I haven't looked into the EULA yet to see if we can use the format for commercial reasons. If we can legally, then i would sincerely looking into porting some of the themes to WB Vista while we work on the Hyperdesk Vista App. I guess we would remove Hypertheme on the installer and replace it with Windowblinds and deposit the WB file on your desktop for you to click since we won't be including WB in our app obviously. Not sure where we'd sell it though.

Again - your condescending tone here is absurd. I ask again, just who are you to be passing judgment on his work? And don't try to take the high road, you were being an assh*le, plain and simple. It wasn't 'this isn't my cup of tea, I would have done it differently', it was 'he did it poorly and I do not deem this work worthy of my appreciation'.

regardless.. for both of you, supposed professionals, to come in here like stampeding rhino's insulting everyone, calling me personally names like kiddo, lesser skinner, mini-napoleon, demented etc etc.. is unacceptable.

There was no stampede on my part (Jeff's reaction speaks for itself, hehe - I do have to buy a muzzle for my good buddy). I simply pointed out to you that your abilities in no way entitle you to the attitude you're spouting. That simple. If you don't like being called kiddo and mini-Napoleon, then stop acting that way.

As for the lesser skinner thing, I guess I should really apologize - but I won't. In my original post I never said you sucked, nor did I say or even imply that my abilities were in any way greater than yours... I only stated (and quite correctly, I might add) that the quality of your work, however good you might think or be told it is, in no way justifies your attitude. I continue to stand by that.

It was only when you got defensive and started daring me to a pissing contest (very immature I might add) - thus implying that you were in some way more skilled than myself - that I decided to take some well-deserved stabs. You went there first.

Its a pity you wont enter the contest

Like I said, it's utterly pointless. I already know I can design circles around you and I really don't care enough about your opinion or acceptance to invest the time. I'll just continue pushing out stuff that looks better than yours day-to-day - just like I've always done.

Peace to everyone else - but vStyler needs to learn some humility. Where he gets off with this condescending attitude of his I'll never understand.

Ok i just finished reading all 15 pages of these posts, and have come to the conclusion, that everyone, and i mean everyone, needs a little quality time off, step outside and take a deep breath. Your all creating unnecessary stress on each other, and life is too short for that, and i tend to be an expert on stress, i worked as an officer in a maximum security facility for 23 years, so i know all about it. I dont know anyone on here, but after reading all those posts i feel like i am your next door neighbor

Bill, for someone who is so busy and doesnt have time for all this you damn sure keep running that chopper... yes.. your a brilliant artist.. Your icons and Media players are literally THE best anywhere...you are a genius in the overall ui design genre... You are exactly right.. I could not agree more.

You can not.. however.. produce a better WB...and I..stand by that.

To ME.. and many others.. the quality of the skin in question was low IMO.. no amount of defending your end will change that. If people value my opinion, great, If they don't they are free to believe what they want. Fact remains, I'm allowed to critique your work in any way I see fit if I feel it is warranted..I will continue to do so, you don't have to like it, obviously you don't take negative critique well.

You guys are almost like the German army in 1941 conquering the world, never beaten, supremely confident.. until they met.. the russian winter, and found out, they had a weak spot.

I tried to drop it a post or two back, you wanna keep the piss fest going, then keep dissing me.. I'll take it all day and give it right back.

Ok all. It's time to follow jpmurph1's advice. Take a step back and take a deep, really deep breath. If any of you would like to personally attack eachother from this point on, please take it privately. There is a Private Messaging system here for a reason. Please don't discuss the fact that you shouldnt personally attack eachother, please dont start apologizing, let's just let the personal stuff die off, and get back to discussing the topic objectively.
